Best of Consumer’s Electronic Show 2013

LEGO Mindstorm EV3

Every year the Consumer’s Electronic Show (CES), the massive trade show produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), is held in Las Vegas to highlight the latest and greatest in consumer electronics. Since the CEA is the pre-eminent trade association promoting growth in the $195 billion U.S. consumer electronics industry, you would expect a monster blowout of a trade show.  And that’s just what this show delivered.

The show featured more than 3,250 exhibitors across 1.9 million net square feet of exhibit space, breaking both the space and exhibitor records set in 2012.  This year’s show unveiled about 20,000 new products, and there were several new products that simply blew the doors off of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Here is a sampling of a few of the electronic innovations that we felt were truly cutting edge.

  • Samsung 3D DIGITAL CAMERASamsung 45mm 2D/3D Camera Lens – Samsung unveiled the new NX 45mm F1.8 2D/3D lens, the first one-lens 3D system capable of capturing both still images and full HD movies in perfect 3D quality.  Normally, if you want to shoot 3D images, you need two cameras, or at least two lenses. But the innovators at Samsung crafted a lens with two LCD shutters inside the lens that alternate exposures within microseconds to give 3-D depth to the image.  Of course, the feature can be turned off if you simply want a 2D image, but where’s the fun in that?
  • NVIDIA Project Shield Portable Gaming Device — If you’re a gamer, you’re gonna love Project Shield.  It’s the first portable gaming device that really plays like a bigger home device.  It has a full-size game controller, a 5-inch touchscreen, a NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, breakthrough Wi-Fi technology, and stunning HD video and audio.  But not only is it a gaming device designed to add tactile controls to Android games, it also links up with email and web browsing to bring you a very cool, hand-held that can do it all.
  • Sony’s Xperia Z Smartphone – It wouldn’t be a proper CES report without at least one smartphone shout-out.  The Sony Xperia Z is that phone.  Sleek, full HD display, super thin, water/dust resistant, powerful – what’s not to like. Wait; did you say water resistant?  Yes, so if you’re one of those people who must talk or text while showering, this is definitely the phone for you.
  • LEGO Mindstorm EV3 – Probably the coolest thing to come out of CES 2013 was the EV3.  Yes, LEGO has had Mindstorm robotics since 1998, but the new EV3 is clearly a leap ahead (picture above).  The beauty of this set is that it can be as simple or as sophisticated as needed.  With the blend of basic computer science and simple building techniques, the EV3 gives kids a chance to make their own robots very easily. For the more experienced, EV3 begs to be tinkered with, and a Bluetooth link to the computing ‘brick’ allows the EV3 to be controlled via a remote control Android app. The kit has instructions for a few different robots, but it’s LEGO, so anyone can create their own.

So the 2013 CES lived up to its predecessors.  And while there were many other cool things – ultra HD and OLED televisions, new headphones, iPad accessories, wireless speakers and IP cameras – we just didn’t have the space to talk about everything. But all this cool new stuff and the record breaking size of this year’s show is enough to make us eagerly anticipate CES 2014 even more.  Besides, it’s Vegas, baby.

We’ll have a full CES wrap-up from the Davison Licensing Department next week.  Stay Tuned….

Better Tether in production — another dream on its way!

Davison inventionsIt started out as just an idea in the mind of our client, Ed. His dream for a better way to tether his dog has turned into a tangible product, which was licensed by Hugs Pet Products.

“It’s great to see, now that we’re getting direct feedback from the factory.” The Licensing VP also reported that “several large retailers are interested in the product.”

The Better Tether, formerly known as the Low-Pro, offers a more humane and convenient way to tether a dog outdoors — it provides a constant source of food and water that cannot be spilled and it never has to be moved for the lawnmower! The product had a great showing at the Global Pet Expo last month, and it will soon be on its way to market.

new pet products“Seeing actual factory tooling making something we created means a ton,” said Jason, Davison’s corporate design manager. “It’s great to see our creations come to life. But, most importantly, it means that someone besides us and our client believes in the product — so much so that they’re willing to go out and spend thousands of dollars ramping-up for production. It’s awesome! We’re all very excited to see the factory product!”

Check back here next week for the full story of our client, Ed, and how he came up with his awesome idea — you won’t want to miss it!

The Fill N’ Grill Sells Out in 3 Minutes on QVC!

davison products qvcThe Fill N’ Grill made its debut on QVC and it was a huge success!

Fitness guru, Chris Freytag, presented the product on the popular segment, “In the Kitchen with David.” During the show, Chris showcased how to make traditional burgers stuffed with an array of delicious fillings including cheese, bacon and pepperoni. She also demonstrated how the Fill N’ Grill can make healthier options, such as turkey burgers stuffed with caramelized onions and feta cheese.

The Fill N’ Grill stuffed burger maker is a quick and easy way to fill a burger with your favorite ingredients. To use, simply put a meat patty in the bottom tray, press down with the meat-shaper tool and stuff your favorite ingredients in the center. Once the fillings are set, place a second patty on top, close the lid and press the “burger button” three times to seal the edges. Then, pull out the handled tray – which also serves as a spatula —  and your burger is ready for the grill!fill n grill burger maker

We are ecstatic to report that the Fill N’ Grill sold out of 3,000 units in just three minutes!  There was also a large number of QVC customers who signed up for the product’s waiting list. The host said it all when she gushed, “These are so cool. You better bring us more next time, because I want some!”

Phenomenal trade show has BBBig Results!

Global Pet Expo
Davison’s VP of Licensing has been to a lot of trade shows, but few, if any can compare to the 2011 Global Pet Expo in Orlando. Nearly all of the products we’ve done for Hugs Pet Products were on display in a booth that was also designed by Davison.

“It was one of the best, if not the best show I’ve been to,” the VP said. “We had a lot of new client products on display and there was phenomenal feedback from buyers.”

Representatives from Pet Smart, Petco, Bed Bath & Beyond, LTD Commodities, as well as distributors and retailers in Canada, South America, Australia and Europe expressed interest in selling numerous products in the Hugs line!
new pet productsThe Better Tether, formerly known as Low Pro, was received very well; several companies want to sell it and Hugs is tooling up for production to fill orders. Many other new and innovative pet products we developed for Hugs were introduced and received enthusiastic feedback. In fact, Bed Bath & Beyond wants to test several of them in select stores!

According to the VP, Bed Bath & Beyond also wants to put some of the product videos we created for the Expo in their stores during the test, and several e-tailers want to post the videos on their sites!

Needless to say, the owners of Hugs Pet Products were “extremely happy” with all the work we did. “The booth looked awesome” due to the 25+ innovative products it contained, said the VP. This was emphasized by comments they heard from buyers, such as: “Wow, you have some really unique products.”

Here is what the President of Hugs Pet Products had to say:

“The Global Pet show was phenomenal for Hugs! The booth looked great … with the backdrop, posters, videos and all the packaging and products displayed. It really helped draw customers in so that we could meet and talk to them. We couldn’t have done it without all the fantastic support from all of you at Davison! Over the 3 days, we got so many valuable leads. It really was an exceptional opportunity for us to showcase our products. And having the prototypes and sample packaging for the items that are still under development was so helpful.”

Bread-It Ultimate Breading Station has great debut on QVC!

Davison productsThe Bread-It “Ultimate Breading Station” that we created for Xtraordinary Home Products has just been launched into the marketplace on QVC! The innovative kitchen product, which keeps all breading ingredients neat and organized, was presented during the popular “In the Kitchen with David” show.

“It was a great debut,” said Davison’s VP of Licensing. “The presenters really showed all of the product’s great features.”

Co-host Marie Louise Ludwig said the item is the “perfect” solution to a common problem. “The bowls are longer and deeper so you can bread food correctly,” she said, demonstrating. The hosts also showed multiple great uses for the product and highlighted the “naturally non-stick” silicone material.

The QVC “first look item” will be shown at the International Housewares Show in Chicago, March 6 – 8, where it is sure to garner the attention of buyers looking for innovative new products to add to their store shelves.

This is the sixth product in two years to air on QVC as a result of the collaboration between Davison and XHP. The unique product follows successful QVC launches of many products, including the Meatball Baker, Party Traveler, and Silicone Dessert Bar Pan (all client products), as well as the Surprise Filled Dessert Pan.

“I’m not surprised this one was also snapped up by QVC,” said CEO George Davison. “It’s a testament of how great things come from teamwork and strong partnerships. I’m very proud of the team for turning out another winner! Bread-It is a super multi-use set of collapsible bowls … It’s great for breading as well as for serving snacks and sides … plus when you’re finished it takes virtually zero storage space!”

Another D-lightful product has made its marketplace debut, but it certainly won’t be the last one — more great Davison innovations for XHP are set to launch into the market in the coming months, so stay tuned!

Sweet product news – Sweetheart Silicone Dessert Pan in stores for Valentine’s Day!

Davison inventions

We recently received samples of the much-anticipated Silicone Dessert Pans for Easter and Valentine’s Day. They did not disappoint, to say the least.

“The products look great; they turned out really nice. The packaging really makes it pop,” said Davison’s VP of Licensing. “They look fantastic; the packaging looks dynamite,” agreed the corporate design manager.

new baking inventions

The Sweetheart Silicone Dessert Pan and Easter Egg Silicone Dessert Pan are selling in Montgomery Ward, where they join the original Dessert Bar Pan, invented by our client, Joseph.

XHP and the corporate team collaborated on the design and bounced ideas off each other to come up with the final results, said the design manager. Team members did the package design, product design, product engineering and packaging engineering.

The new holiday-themed dessert pans will be shown at the International Housewares Show in March along with our prototypes of holiday pans for Halloween (pumpkin), Thanksgiving (turkey) and Christmas (snowman, tree). In addition, there are many themed versions in the works for presentation to a corporation that is a giant in the entertainment industry.

Davison inventions“Now it’s a matter of seeing how many get picked up and what they want to take,” explained the VP.

Hopes on all sides are high, and depending on how well they do at the show, the possibilities are immense, said the design manager.

“It could really turn into something huge if it goes.” The possibilities for our client are also incredible, if buyers respond favorably, said the VP. “We have put our client in the best position possible.”

Bread-It in Homeworld Magazine and Headed for QVC!

Davison inventions

The Bread-It meal-prep product that we created for Xtraordinary Home Products is featured in the latest edition of HomeWorld Business magazine! The innovative item, which keeps breading ingredients neat and organized, is also headed to the marketplace — It will be for sale in the Solutions catalog and on QVC in February!

“It’s great to see; it’s good exposure, and hopefully that generates more interest in the product,” said Davison’s VP of Licensing. He also reported that Bed, Bath & Beyond is very interested in the Bread-It, so we may have even more good news to share in the future.

The VP spoke with Marie Louise Ludwig, the QVC host who will be presenting the product. “She really likes it; she thinks it’s neat. Now it’s just a matter of whether consumers think so,” he said. “The design team did another good job with this product. I’m sure we’ll get good results.”

The president of XHP was surprised with how quickly the product appeared in the magazine. “Funny how this got press so fast,” he wrote in an email about the article.

Apparently, the editors know great innovation when they see it! Congratulations to all those on Davison’s corporate design team who worked on this awesome new product — Great work everyone!

Two nifty, new products in production!

Davison inventions

Two new products we created for Health Enterprises that have received great reviews are going into initial production. If all goes according to plan, the TheraPED and TheraTOES could be on the shelves of a major drugstore chain early next year. Other major retailers are also interested.

“There was enough interest that Health Enterprises decided to put in an order for pre-production quantities,” said Davison’s corporate creative coach. “It’s a good sign.”

New Davison productsHis team is in the process of finalizing the packaging and instructions regarding the heating and cooling properties of the products. The president of Health Enterprises got to review the progress when he visited us this past week for a brainstorming session. So far, he is pleased with the results.

“He liked it very much; he’s pretty psyched about it,” said the design manager.

TheraPED is designed primarily for women who wear high heels and who get sore and cramped toes as a result. The product, which wraps around the foot like a gladiator boot, stretches and realigns cramped toes while soothing them with heat or cooling gel therapy. TheraTOES is like a mini slipper with a gel insert on the bottom that delivers soothing relief to cramped and achy feet and toes.

The products were born out of a question from the president of HE. While showing the team a product on the market that realigns cramped toes, he asked, “What can we do to make this better?” The answer was simple – add hot and cold therapy as we did for the line of braces we created for the company.

The products are truly unique with the added gel packs and the innovative design, as well as a “nifty zebra print that’s gone over really well,” said the design manager, who has seen nothing on the market quite like it. “It’s a good product because there’s not a lot of tooling involved, so it’s cheaper to manufacture and there’s less of a risk.”

The products also will be back in front of other major retailers, according to Davison’s VP of Licensing. And the team is working on an entire line of similar spa-type products oriented toward women, which are an innovative spin on what’s out there in brace market, he said.

Once again, great work, team!
