How’s That Made Thursday: The Hydro Bone

Featured Invention, How's That Made Thursday, Hugs Pet Products

Call us crazy, but we’re taking this nice stretch of weather as spring is here to stay.  Bring on fun in the sun!

Of course, our pets are never far from any outdoor excitement and it’s National Pet Month; so, we’re taking a look at a refreshing invention that’s made quite a splash in the pet product industry.  Today, we’re examining how the Hydro Bone is made.

If you’re not yet familiar with the award-winning Hydro Bone, it’s a hydrating pet toy that releases water as pets chew and play with it.  And, it all started in the mind an inventor who wanted to find a way to giver her dog a drink when they were traveling on long car trips.

She found the water bowl was a definite “no” and her pup couldn’t exactly drink out of a water bottle.  Knowing that the car wasn’t the only place that pets needed to keep cool, Diane DiRaimo set out to invent a product that would help pets stay cool any-and-everywhere.

The concept behind the Hydro Bone is simple:  with molded rubber and a foam core, the Hydro Bone is made to absorb and hold water.  Through small holes throughout the toy, the water is slowly released when the toy is squeezed during play.

Solving the inventor’s initial problem, the Hydro Bone quenches pet thirst without the mess.  Going the extra mile, it can be used in the car, at the park or at home.  In fact, it can even be frozen to provide longer-lasting refreshment.

What started as an idea has expanded into an entire family of hydrating pet inventions.  The Hydro family now includes the Hydro Bone, Hydro Ball, Hydro Ring, Hydro Saucer and Hydro Fetch.

The Hydro Bone is available in sizes small, medium and large and was even named a 2010 Dog Fancy Magazine Editors’ Choice Award winner!

Magazine Ranks Hydro Bone as Anything But “Real Simple”

Davison News, Hugs Pet Products, Inventor Stories

If you know us very well, you know we’re all about finding innovative solutions to everyday problems. Now, a Davison-designed product is receiving recognition for doing just that.

Real Simple Magazine, whose motto is “life made easier, every day,” recently included the Davison-designed Hydro Bone on their “40 Most-Pinned Problem Solving Products” list.

Of the hydrating chew toy, the magazine said, “If you’re hitting the park with Fido, be sure to pack the proper warm-weather essentials. Simply soak this rubber bone in water and toss it to your four-legged friend, so he’ll stay well–hydrated all day long.”

Licensed and sold by Hugs Pet Products, the Hydro Bone was born in the mind of our client, Diane, who first got the idea for the refreshing toy when she was looking for a way to keep her Japanese Chin puppy hydrated on long car trips.

Diane’s Hydro Bone certainly solved that problem and more! On Real Simple’s list, the Hydro Bone is among other problem-solving products like a corn de-silker, dissolvable jar labels and a machine that chops up candy or cookie ice cream toppings. View Real Simple’s entire list here.

Congrats to Diane, our Creationeers, Hugs Pet Products and everyone else who had a hand in bringing this innovative bone to market!

In her article “Pet Supplies For Dogs I Found On Social Media,” About.com writer Alissa Wolf covers four awesome pup products, including Davison’s Hydro line!davison design pet products Alissa Wolf is a journalist and life-long animal lover who has worked as an editor, columnist and correspondent for numerous regional and national newspapers and magazines. Wolf writes

“I received an interesting line of dog toys from a Missouri-based company called Hugs Pet Products: the Hydro line.

The line consists of five differently shaped rubber toys: Hydro Bone, Hydro Ball, Hydro Saucer, Hydro Ring and Hydro Fetch. Not only do these provide pooches with hours of chewing, fetching and general enjoyment, these also hydrate dogs as they play.”

These dog toys invented by dog parent and Davison client, Diane DiRaimo, contain a unique sponge/foam core that, when soaked in water, absorb the water via small holes; the water is gradually released when a dog chews on the toy. The dogs get hydrated, without the water dripping onto a floor, car seat or other surface. These toys can also be frozen.

The toys received a favorable review from pet products pundit Dr. Marty Becker on “Good Morning America,” and were showcased in the lifestyle magazine Real Simple and were accorded an Editor’s Choice Award from Dog Fancy magazine.

These are just some of the innovative pet products available from this company, a family business that was founded in 2009 by pet lovers Katie and Chad Brewer as a division of their existing business, Maze Innovations, Inc.

The Brewers are parents to a virtual zoo consisting of several dogs, cats, goats and sheep. Oh, and they have three human kids.

Hugs Pet Products prides itself on designing, manufacturing and distributing quality and innovative pet products worldwide for dogs, cats and birds.”

“I love the story behind Hugs Pet Products‘ name: owners Katie and Chad Brewer wanted to celebrate the boundless love and lifetime of excited greetings (and puppy hugs) they received from their pets by giving back in the form of innovative pet products. Katie and Chad believe that “at the heart of every hug is love,” which is how they approach the design and manufacturing of their modern pet gear!davison design pet products

Their passion for pets shows in their original product designs (which they also manufacture and distribute). I mean, hello, how awesome is that apple-shaped, tooth-scrubbing chew toy?

We couldn’t resist rounding up a few of our favorite Hugs products, of course! 1: Potty Paws 2: Chew Core 3: Hydro Bone 4: Tee Bone 5: Better Tether 6: Silicone Dog Treat Pan 7: Gel Pet Mat“

It’s great to see extremely positive feedback across the ever-changing spectrum of pet product writers – from bloggers to veteran journalists. All of this Hugs success sets our tails wagging.

Hydro toys quench Hotlanta’s thirst for innovative pet toys

Davison’s Hydro toys were featured on Atlanta’s CBS “Better Mornings,” hosted by Jennifer Valdez. Jennifer welcomed international pet expert Charlotte Reed – a corporate lawyer who has grown her pet company from a one-woman operation to a premier, full-service pet care provider – to talk about some must-have dog toys to beat the summer heat.

Reed showcases the Hydro Ring and displays how the Hydro line refreshes parched pups by giving it a squeeze to release the water stored in its absorbent core.

The rest of the Hydro line was also featured on The Times Square Chronicles – a blog that brings a sense of community to Times Square’s three zip codes and beyond. Their article “Five Summer’s Must-Have Pet Products” notes they’re “the perfect way to quench your dog’s thirst as he plays. Serve frozen for fun on the hottest of days.”

The Hydro line is a set of hydrating chew toys that keep canines cool and content, even in hot weather. The water-holding toy combines refreshment with fun and quenches your dog’s thirst while playing. When soaked, the molded rubber bone’s foam core absorbs water, which is then released through specially designed holes as the toy is squeezed.

Hydro Bone Celebrated by NBC’s Petside.com as ‘Beat the Heat’ Solution

Davison News, Product News

Petside.com – an NBC Universal company that covers pet health, behavior, lifestyle and trends, highlighting the joys and challenges of having pets by serving up current, topical content from around the pet care world – featured Davison’s Hydro Bone in its “9 Products to Keep Your Pet Cool” article.

Petside’s Charlotte Reed writes, “Combining fun and chewing-refreshment, the Hydro Bone is the ultimate hydrating chew toy for your pet. The molded dog toy has a foam core, which absorbs and holds liquid. Simply soak the Hydro Bone in water and it slowly releases water to quench your dog’s thirst and keep [him or] her hydrated as [he or] she plays. The Hydro Bone is also freezable for lasting enjoyment.”

The Hydro Bone was created by a dog lover, who knew there had to be a better way to keep her puppy hydrated while in the car. Diane DiRaimo loved taking her Japanese Chin puppy Alexander James for rides, but she had a hard time keeping him hydrated and happy on long trips. She knew putting a water bowl in the car or feeding him out of a water bottle was out of the question… but, she thought, surely there must be a better way to provide Alexander with on-the-spot refreshment!

Dogs need water, and dogs love bones, right? So Diane brought her idea for a hydrating bone to Davison, where fellow animal lover and Creationeer, Curtis, and his creative team, got to work on helping Diane’s idea soak up success, creating an absorbent chew toy with a foam core.

The Hydro Bone, which was selected as a Dog Fancy Editor’s Choice Winner, comes in three sizes, for dogs and puppies six weeks and older. The water-holding toy combines refreshment with fun, so it quenches your dog’s thirst while playing. When soaked, the molded rubber bone’s foam core absorbs water (just like a sponge), which is then released through specially designed holes as the toy is squeezed. The durable Hydro Bone is also freezable for lasting refreshment and cooling.

Congratulations to Diane and the Davison team for whetting the appetites of national pet pundits!

Diane loved taking Alexander James, her Japanese Chin puppy, for rides in the car. However, she had a hard time keeping him hydrated and happy on long trips. She knew putting a water bowl in the car or feeding him out of a water bottle was out of the question… but, she thought, surely there must be a better way to provide Alexander with on-the-spot refreshment!

Pet Guru Wendy Diamond features the Hydro Bone on NYC Morning Show

Davison News, Product News

Wendy Diamond — entrepreneur and animal rescue advocate, author of two cookbooks and founder/editor of Animal Fair magazine – recently appeared on New York City’s FOX morning show “Good Day New York” to discuss important summer safety tips for everybody’s four-legged friends. During her spot, Diamond showcased Davison’s & Hugs Pet Products’ Hydro Bone as a way for our dogs to beat the heat.

Diamond spoke with the “Good Day New York” hosts to emphasize that the big issue for our animal companions this and every summer is the heat. Stressing that our dogs don’t sweat but pant, Diamond showcases some of her favorite products to keep our animals cool and healthy this season.

Appearing alongside Dyson’s Air Multiplier Blue Bladeless Fan and other must-have’s for the dog days of summer, Dog Fancy’s Editor’s Choice Award Winner Hydro Bone is recommended by Diamond to keep your pet hydrated and safe in the heat.

Dogs can quickly get too warm and dehydrated, particularly if they are active out of doors, so Davison created the Hydro Bone, a hydrating chew toy, to keep canines cool and content, even in hot weather. The chew toy comes in 3 sizes, for dogs and puppies 6 weeks and older. The water holding toy combines fun with refreshment, so it quenches your dog’s thirst while playing. When soaked, the molded rubber bone’s foam core absorbs water, which is then released through specially designed holes as the toy is squeezed.

It’s great to see the Hydro Bone garner such positive national attention!

Here’s hoping even more of our pet-savvy products create a buzz at the Union Square dog park.
