Dare to Invent

Cool Cot House Transcript

(Narrator: George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
Meet Sharon Jones. She’s from Washington. She’s a pet lover and a bit of an outdoors’ nuts, who goes camping every weekend. Her biggest problem is finding a spot in her tent for all of her pets. I mean, imagine being crammed in a tent with ten of your furry friends. You wouldn’t be able to tell who’s who.

(Inventor: Sharon)
We have: Jack & Jill, Sy & Fy – So SyFy, Pete, Sylvester McGillicutti, Jacob E., Blue, Miss, Sammy and I’m missing somebody, I know that I’m missing somebody.

(Narrator: George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
See what I mean?

(George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
Somebody’s first reaction to hearing Sharon’s problem might be, well, why don’t you just leave your pets at home? But, they really wouldn’t be a pet lover, would they?

(Narrator: George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
Portable dog and cat beds, they’ve been around forever, but they don’t protect pets from bad weather. Sharon came up with the idea to create a new type of portable dog tent that pet owners can take with them on camping trips, so their pets have a comfortable and safe place to sleep.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
Sharon’s inspiration for this tent came to her when she was at the store and just saw those little dome tents that are on the store shelf that they use to represent the larger tents. She saw that and wondered why she couldn’t have that for pets and take all of her pets camping with her.

(Inventor: Sharon)
And that was my idea. I was listening to other people around me saying, oh that would be so cool.

(Narrator: George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
Shortly after Sharon submitted her idea to us, the roof on her house started to leak. No one she liked to go camping so much. Her house was falling apart… The pressure was on to come up with a killer product, so Sharon could repair her roof.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
So, we decided to take a look at these small tents that Sharon suggested. But, we noticed that they are too small and don’t keep pets dry. So, we need to come up with a solution to keep pets cool, comfortable and dry.

(Narrator: George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
We came up with a modern day doghouse, with the floors a couple inches off of the ground. It was made with a flexible and breathable fabric, so that there’s plenty of ventilation for our pets. The roof also has vents that open and close, depending on the weather conditions. We ended up calling it the Cool Cot House!

(Dan, Licensing)
I loved that it was portable and could be built in a matter of minutes. I wanted to get it in stores immediately.

(Narrator: George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
Whoa, not so fast Dan. First, we need to test it and make sure that it’s a winner.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
We are going to get ready to test out the Cool Cot House. We thought we would have our stunt dummy, Clay, climb in there…

(Clay)
I knew this was where this was going.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
[Do] you [think that you’re] going to fit, Clay?

(Clay)
I’m trying.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
It looks pretty comfortable from out here.

(Clay)
You know, if I could stay here for another 3 1/2 hours, I think I would be good… (Aside) That’s when I’m done with work.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
We’ll see how he feels about that in a few minutes. We’re going to spray some water through there and see if we can get this thing soaking wet. And hopefully, not Clay.

(The team turns on large fan and begins to spray water on the tent)

(Clay)
So far, so good! Everything from here and back stays dry.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
Alright, let’s take it up a notch and get the effect of a hailstorm.

(Clay)
You know, I don’t remember Mother Nature being this much of a b**ch. This storm is worse than I expected.

(Curtis, Creationeer – off camera)
“Hail” yeah, it is.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
How did it hold up to the hail?

(Clay)
Very good. Although, this was the most aggressive, focused hail that I have ever experienced.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
We can open up these tent flaps here and get a little air blowing through.

(Clay)
I can stay here all day long. I’m pretty cozy.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
So, is this one of the better testing scenes that you’ve done Clay?

(Clay)
Yeah, I’m thinking that I’m pretty much getting out of this one unscathed.

(Curtis, Creationeer)
I think we can take care of that!

(Two men run behind the tent with large buckets of water)

(Clay)
What’s that supposed to mean? (As the water comes rushing into the tent) Ahh!

(Dan, Licensing)
Overall, the test was a great success. We presented Sharon’s tent idea to Hugs Pet Products and they wanted to get it on store shelves immediately.

(Inventor: Sharon)
Seeing the finished product for the first time blew me away. It was way better than my original concept.

(George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
You never know when the next great idea is going to come along. Sharon’s Cool Cot House is going to improve the lives of pets.

(Narrator: George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
We flew Sharon to Inventionland, so that we could all celebrate the success of her idea. We also wanted to present her with her first royalty check.

(George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
That’s your first royalty check!

(Dan, Licensing)
This is the first royalty check for the product.

(Inventor: Sharon)
You got to be kidding me. (Creationeers clapping in the background)

(Inventor Jean)
I’m a grandmother and I’m an inventor. I think that is something to be proud of.

(Dan, Licensing)
Congratulations!

(George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
What does all of this mean to you? I mean, you had this idea, and now it’s coming to life.

(Inventor: Sharon)
It means that we can finally have a place [to live] that we can enjoy and the roof doesn’t leak and the floors aren’t caving in. It’s some place where we can be safe. And, it couldn’t have happened with you guys. I’m just so grateful. Thank you.

(George M. Davison (aka Mr. D), CEO and Founder of Davison)
This has been such a great success for Sharon. Her product has sold in Sam’s Club stores and other major retailers too. It has also been on several television shows to share her idea with the world.

(Inventor: Sharon)
It’s not a matter of simply the money. I want to share my ideas with other people, whether it’s a dog, whether it’s a cat, whether it’s a ferret, whether it’s whatever. I want everyone to be able to enjoy that pet tent.
