Can you imagine getting a long awaited phone call out of the blue telling you that your idea has sparked the interest of a company? You then find out from Davison’s Licensing Department that they are making an offer to license your product ! That’s right…Davison tries longer! Even when our contracts expire with our clients, we still have companies approaching us and we still attend tradeshows to find corporate licenses for our client’s ideas.

This is a phone call many would love to receive! However, when a client’s project does not get licensed, they tend to move on. In most cases, clients have long since given up on their products, and in some cases – have even forgotten about them. We always love getting offers and deals for our clients even after our contracts expire because it makes a statement of our dedication to our clients!

People give up on their ideas yet we hold on to them in hopes that we find a company who is looking for a particular product. Just because your idea doesn’t get picked up on the first pitch, doesn’t mean years later a company won’t have a use for it !

For example, recently (this past March) a company that has licensed products with us in the past attended the International Housewares show in Chicago. They were looking for products that they could bring to the show that fit into their existing product line. It just so happens that the team at Davison held on to a product, The Taco Shell Maker, that fit the description of the product category the company was looking for.

After first refusing, the persistence of our licensing department paid off and the company agreed to showcase the product at the upcoming trade show. It turns out, the product was a huge hit with both retailers and manufacturers. The company quickly realized they should adopt this product into their product line and soon after, they licensed it !

The best part about this is that our team did this second round of product pitching, absolutely free! It didn’t cost the client a penny. This is just one of the many examples of times where companies have been in search of a product that wasn’t so successful in the past, but years later, is exactly what a different company was looking for.

Each New Year, our Davison licensing team gets excited to kick-off another year of trade shows. Hitting the trade show circuit provides us with opportunities to make valuable connections with companies of interest, share new products and also learn about new industry trends.

Speaking of industry trends, “Outdoor living is one of the biggest focal points right now,” said Managing Senior Director of Licensing Matt. Recently, Matt and Managing Senior Director of Licensing Bob had an opportunity to focus on just that at the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association’s annual show – HPBExpo 2017, held this year in Atlanta, Georgia.

From March 2nd through March 4th, Matt and Bob explored HPBExpo that “attracts thousands of distributors and retailers…that live and breathe the indoor-outdoor lifestyle,” per the show site.

“This was our first time at the show,” said Matt. “We’ve been doing the major shows, so we wanted to try a smaller show in an effort to reach out to smaller companies…It really opens us up to different audiences,” said Matt.

The show not only opened Davison up to different audiences, but it provided an opportunity to expand the amount of companies we have to work with in this specific category. “We have some new contacts to work with that will hopefully turn into some new products,” said Matt.

From this licensing duo’s observations, new products are definitely something needed in the “fifth room” space, referring to semi-outdoor spaces, patios, game rooms or other areas of the home where you might seasonally entertain guests. “It’s just an industry starving for innovation. New products, new styles and a whole thought process on how to attack the space is needed,” said Bob.

Each trade show is an opportunity for our licensing team to brainstorm, “Are there accessory items, attachments and innovative ways to combine two purposes into one product? As a company, how can we impact this area and make ourselves a recognizable name for this particular category?” asked Bob.

Additionally, our licensing team asks, “What [inventions] do we have from our clients that fit?”

“It’s just another wonderful example of how an idea comes to be!” said founder Mr. George Davison (“Mr. D”), excited to venture to The Container Store following great news for Davison client Jennifer’s Hanger Pocket Accessory Organizer product, which keeps clothes and accessories neatly organized.

“We found out that the product has also been private-labeled by The Container Store!” said Mr. D, noting that Jennifer’s Hanger Pockets have already found success in versions available through other stores.

Upon learning this news, Mr. D took a special trip to The Container Store’s Pittsburgh, PA location, which opened last October, following a private preview party. It was an exciting moment for Mr. D at the store as he prepared to give a special shout to Jennifer on the success of her invention idea.

In case you missed it last Wednesday, Davison client Bobby’s PushPan Brownie Pan was featured on the popular QVC segment, “Kitchen Unlimited with Carolyn.”

Bobby came to Davison with his idea for better brownies. His innovative pan would later be licensed to our friends at Love Cooking Company, who were also excited for this brownie innovation to debut on leading video and ecommerce retailer QVC!

It’s always exciting to see one of our products in the limelight!

While on the show, the product went by the name “PushPerfect 8” Brownie Pan with Slicing Grid” and was shown by longtime QVC guest host Marie Louise Ludwig, alongside host Carolyn Gracie.

This wasn’t Ludwig’s first time showing off a Davison-licensed product. In fact, she showcased the Pinata Nonstick Cupcake Pan last September.

In last week’s segment, QVC host Carolyn Gracie and Ludwig both demonstrated the innovative PushPerfect 8” Brownie Pan and how it can be used to make just about anything.

For example, brownies with ganache on top or crispy cereal treats to satisfy any sweet tooth and some other savory options like pull-apart pepperoni cheese bread and cornbread are just a few delicious choices.

It didn’t take long for Gracie to proclaim that the PushPerfect 8” Brownie Pan had become one of her favorite baking pans!

The pan comes with its own slicing grid that can be used during or after baking.

Last week, we told you that Hugs Pet Products, who have licensed several of our innovative pet products, are getting ready for an exciting few days this week at SuperZoo, a major pet industry trade show.

Even though the National Show for Pet Retailers starts tomorrow, the wait is killing us and we can’t help but give you a sneak peek of what’s in store!

Our friends over at Inventionland sent us a behind-the-scenes look from last week as they worked hard to finish the Massaging Groomers’ prototypes and display by deadline!

The magazine, deemed ”the leading business-to-business publication for the housewares industry,” first featured two of Love’s latest products, the Mrs. Fields Cupcake Cone Pan and the Mrs. Fields Scoop N Cut Cookie Tool.

As you may know, Love has teamed up with one of the most famous names in baking, Mrs. Fields, to feature these two new Davison-designed items, which are to begin selling this fall.

According to HomeWorld Business Magazine writers, the Cupcake Cone Pan “addresses what [Love] said has become a social media trend, with consumers sharing images, recipes and decorating ideas for baking cupcakes in ice cream cones on such sites as Pinterest.”

Not content with featuring solely Love’s latest innovations, HomeWorld Business Magazine also showcased the Mrs. Fields Cool Bake, Brookie Pan and Half N Half Cupcake/Muffin Pan, which are already on sale. In the article, another Davison-designed product, the Mrs. Fields Baker’s Sto ‘n Go is also mentioned as part of Love’s Bakeware Innovations line.

Today, we’re heating things up and taking you back to the long, sunny days of summer when we first introduced a few Davison-designed cat toys.

At the time, Hugs Pet Products, who licensed the innovative line that promises to keep cats occupied for hours, was preparing to showcase the toys at one of the pet product industry’s biggest trade shows, SuperZoo in Las Vegas.

Well, since that time the weather has turned colder, but some pretty purr-fect things have been happening for the toys, which are proving to be hot – hot – HOT!

“Look what hit Petco stores…” said Davison Vice President of Business Development and Licensing, when he shared a photo of the line on store shelves earlier this month.

That’s right, several toys in Hugs’ innovative cat line have landed (on all four-feet, of course) on the shelves at the leading pet specialty retailer. Of course, we’re “feline” pretty good about the placement!

“Hugs and Inventionland are excited to finally see the new innovative cat items starting to hit PETCO stores. The six new items look great on the store shelf and we look forward to the continued success with Petco in this category,” said Simbeck.

Check out the Wobble Ball, Mouse Trap, Teeter Rocker, Wibble Wobble, Whack-A-Mouse and Purr-Fect Ball on Petco shelves.

With Thanksgiving (mashed potatoes) approaching this (turkey) week, it’s hard (stuffing) to think about (pumpkin pie) anything but… food! However, we’ve finally caught up with our Licensing Team, who recently attended Atlantic City’s Non-Foods Marketing (NFM) Expo, which includes literally everything… except food. The trade show now carries on a 10-year tradition of catering to retailers interested in general merchandise, including a variety of products and seasonal items one may find at a grocery or drug store… you know right behind the poultry seasoning or turkey basters!

The NFM Expo hosted over 150 vendors, including Hugs Pet Products and AWAY Bug Repellent, past licensees of Davison products, who both showcased many awesome Davison designs.

According to Davison’s Vice President of Business Development and Licensing Dan Simbeck, the show was very successful for Hugs and AWAY!

“The show went well and was made up of wide variety of retailers… Hugs and AWAY both made an impact at the show with product sales and good meetings, which will increase sales and distribution in 2013!” said Simbeck.

Simbeck also told us that the NFM Expo allowed Hugs and AWAY to connect with retailers that they may not typically have the chance to do meet with.

“”Mostly small to mid size retailers (1 store – 250 stores), along with a few big boys like Walgreens,” said Simbeck.

From the east coast to the west coast, Simbeck also shared a quick pic from the SEMA and AAPEX shows, where Davison-designed car cleaning products really shined!
