The Problem:
Nick, a handyman and new Davison inventor, constantly struggled when using traditional stud finders. The magnets in existing products weren’t strong enough to hold the stud finder in place, making it difficult to keep an accurate mark on the wall.
Hanging a single photo often turned into a long, frustrating process of searching, marking, measuring, and re-adjusting. After hours spent attempting to find studs reliably, Nick searched online for a better tool—but nothing existed that solved his start-stop struggle.
Realizing that the market lacked a dependable magnetic solution, Nick knew there had to be a better way.
Davison's Better Way:
To bring his idea to life, Nick partnered with Davison team of innovators and entered the Davison 9-Step Inventing Process, where his concept was transformed from a simple frustration into a fully engineered product.
Working closely with Davison’s design and engineering teams, Nick helped refine the vision for a stud finder that actually stayed put. The team explored the underlying problem—the weak magnetic pull used in traditional stud finders—and worked to design a tool that leveraged a significantly stronger magnet capable of locking onto the hidden nail inside the stud. This would allow users to instantly locate the stud and visually confirm they were in the right spot without holding the tool in place.
Through each step—pre-development, CAD renderings, 3D modeling, engineering adjustments, and multiple rounds of prototyping—Nick was able to watch his idea evolve into a market-ready product. The team tested various magnet strengths, shapes, ergonomic grips, and visibility markers to ensure the final design was easy to use, accurate, and durable.
Once the product design was finalized, Davison developed consumer-friendly packaging that clearly communicated the tool’s benefits for handymen, tradesmen, and DIYers. The product was officially named the Mag Stud Finder™, helping it stand out as a magnetic-powered solution to an everyday problem.
The Mag Stud Finder™ made its market debut, giving Nick the opportunity to see his idea become a real product available for purchase nationwide. Today, handymen, contractors, and weekend DIYers alike can use Nick’s invention to quickly and confidently find studs—and achieve that perfectly straight, perfectly placed hang every time.
