Some inventions, while important, don’t radicalize the world. Society wasn’t particularly impacted when, for example, chip clips were introduced. But there are some ideas that leave such an impact that the world changes once they hit the market. In no particular order, here are ten of them.

Ten World-Changing Inventions – The Wheel

THE WHEEL (approx. 3100 BC)

While the inventor’s name might have been lost to history, their creation most certainly has lived on. The wheel is a natural inclusion on this list for how it revolutionized travel and trade. But it’s the wheel’s use outside of transportation that is truly remarkable. Many machines and devices use wheels, like pulleys, centrifuges, water wheels, and jet engines. Without the wheel, many inventions we now take for granted would’ve never existed.

THE AUTOMOBILE (1885)

Speaking of wheels, the most obvious use of wheels today is another boon that changed travel forever. Between the four wheels of the chassis to the steering wheel, the automobile gave people a chance to travel without spending a fortune or huge amounts of time. Henry Ford and Karl Benz may not have invented the car, but it’s their contributions that are most widely remembered and made automobiles accessible to the public. Ask yourself: how much harder would modern life be without a car?

Ten World-Changing Inventions – Computer

THE COMPUTER (20th century)

If you’re reading this, then it means you have one of two entries on this list: a computer. Again, there’s no exact inventor of the computer, but Alan Turing is largely considered one of the most influential people to computer sciences in general. Computers themselves have given us more than just video games and word processors; without them, we would’ve never landed on the moon or sequenced the human genome. Of course, most computers benefited greatly from the dawn of…

THE INTERNET (1960s)

AKA: The other component needed to read this blog post. Society is still reeling from the internet’s invention, with our approaches to communication, entertainment, and information all being upended. For this reason, it’s impossible to really describe just how it’s impacted the globe since the process is still ongoing. Nevertheless, the rapid change to global expectations on nearly all fronts makes the internet an obvious choice for this list.

Ten World-Changing Inventions – Communication

COMMUNICATION (1836)

While we’re on the subject, communication surely qualifies as world-changing. While the term is broad, here it means “telephone, radio, and television” (although some might want to include the advent of language, both written and oral). Thanks to the telephone, you could speak to anybody, anywhere, at any time. The radio and television radicalized entertainment and newscasting, bringing it right into our homes without the need for a newspaper or cinema. While all three have suffered declines in popularity thanks to the internet, the internet wouldn’t exist without these forefathers.

REFRIGERATION (1876)

What’s for dinner? Before refrigeration, whatever you bought or caught that day would answer the question. Iceboxes were the first attempts at mainstream refrigeration but had to be restocked with ice daily and couldn’t last as long in the summer months. Now, the cold is completely artificially manufactured, allowing us to store meats and dairy products safely year-round. It’s also possible to transport ingredients across the globe, even in the most brutal of heats. And we can’t forget the greatest benefit here: being able to eat ice cream in the summer.

Ten World-Changing Inventions – Plow

THE PLOW (approx. 3500 B.C)

The planet is resistant to change. Trying to dig up fertile soil to raise plants used to be back-breaking and slow before the plow was introduced. It may not be as flashy as some other entries on this list, but the plow allowed people to plant larger plots of land and move from subsistence farming to farming for trade. Interest in trade caused further developments in transportation, numbers, written language, and the construction of shelters and markets for agricultural products. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to claim that the plow is responsible for a blossoming of human civilization.

THE LIGHTBULB (1870s)

Up at dawn, asleep by dusk: this is how humans lived before lightbulbs. Even with candles, the flames were limited in range and only lasted for so long. The creation of Thomas Edison (and Nikola Tesla, but that’s another story…) is less notable for its power of light, however. It’s how it introduced electricity to every home- something that many appliances we now take for granted need in order to run.

Ten World-Changing Inventions – Steam Engine

STEAM ENGINE (1781)

If you wanted to travel prior to the steam engine, you had to dedicate days, even weeks to get to your destination. With a train, however, journeys took less time and didn’t require stops at night for the animals. We can thank James Watt for adding an additional condenser to a Newcomen engine in 1769 for this steam-powered wonder, the face of the industrial revolution.

THE PRINTING PRESS AND MOVABLE (1430s)

Before printing presses, books were for the wealthy and royal alone. Johannes Gutenberg brought literature out of the era of hand-copied manuscripts and eventually revolutionized communication, education, and entertainment. Without the printing press, many later inventions wouldn’t be possible. Think about it…how could we put together Ikea furniture without those easy-to-follow instructions by our side?

Where would these life-changing inventions be if it wasn’t for the inventors behind them? Every inventor has their own personality and approach to coming up with ideas. Do you know your inventing personality? You may be an everyday Edison or perhaps a dynamic or critical inventor. Take our quiz below to find out which one you are!

August 31, 1897.

This was the day that famed inventor and innovator Thomas Edison received a patent for the kinetographic camera. By creating a device that made it possible for films to be viewed by one person at a time through a viewer, Edison created what would later become the motion picture camera.

Edison was always trying to find a better way to do something. The invention of the kinetographic camera came to be as he was trying to boost the sales of his phonograph, which was an invention that allowed for the recording and reproduction of sound.

Inventions usually come to light as a solution to a particular problem. In the case of the kinetographic camera, the problem that Edison was having was synchronizing sound with moving pictures.

Since he couldn’t sync the two media together for his phonograph, he then invented the kinetographic camera with his assistant W.K.L. Dickson, which used celluloid film that had been invented by George Eastman to create moving pictures without sound – silent films.

Once he got his hands on the celluloid film, Edison had three of his workers pretend to be blacksmiths for his moving film.

The film could only be viewed through a peephole at the top of the camera, but it was this invention idea that inspired many to gain interest in the film industry.

The invention however, wasn’t an immediate success. In fact, it took about a decade for it to catch some momentum. That momentum was cut short as screen projectors were introduced into the industry, which made it easier for a group of people to watch a silent movie all at once.

That didn’t deter the inventing duo, because between 1893 and 1903, Edison produced more than 250 films at the Black Maria, which was a film studio that was created by Dickson. Many of the films are those that are found in the Edison Motion Pictures collection at the Library of Congress.

The lesson behind Edison’s kinetographic camera is to always keep your eyes open and be willing to welcome ideas. His journey started to boost sales for the phonograph and ultimately transformed into the creation of a brand-new invention.

Change is a constant in the invention industry and you can leave your mark, too.

The only way to find out is by submitting your invention idea today.

Tomorrow, people all over the United States will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day! In the spirit of giving, we thought that we’d share with you three Thanksgiving inventions!

Ideas come in all shapes and sizes and work to solve a myriad of problems. These three Thanksgiving invention patents were created to solve holiday problems that you never knew existed.

Without further ado, we introduce to you, three Thanksgiving inventions:

Pumpkin Powder – Though it doesn’t sound very appetizing, the invention of pumpkin powder in 1897 was created with the idea of mashing the edible substance of a pumpkin, squash or sweet potato into powder or meal form. From there, this powdery substance could then be combined with water or milk to make pies without having to be cooked before baking.

Pie Filling Device – To build on the latter pie idea, this Thanksgiving invention from 1986 was created to fill pie shells with a fluid filling within a hot oven, via a pumping apparatus. The Pie Filling Device was invented to help alleviate the problem of having to fill pie shells while they are cooking in the oven.

Automatic Mashed Potato System – This more recent Thanksgiving invention idea from 2007 was created in an effort to solve the problem of the time-consuming, inconsistent conventional potato-mashing process. The Automatic Mashed Potato System works in a way that the potatoes would be fed through a unit in the upper cavity of the product that would then pass through a seasoning unit onto a removable collection tray where the seasoned mashed potatoes would collect. From there you can say “voila!” because you’ve just made a batch of mashed potatoes to serve to your friends and family on Thanksgiving Day!

Now that you’ve seen these three Thanksgiving inventions and the problems they look to solve, do you think you’d use any of these for preparing your Thanksgiving Day feast?

From all of us at Davison, we’d like to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

You know the popular saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” That same sentiment can apply to inventions as well!

In today’s blog, we’re going to share a story with you about a very popular invention that’s the perfect example of why it’s important to not pre-judge invention ideas.

Without further ado, here’s the story of a famous toy – the Slinky!

The invention of the Slinky is simple; in fact, it’s almost too simple.

We’ve all played with this curious toy at least once in our life. Remember how it goes – you place the slinky at the top of the stairs and watch as it fluidly cascades down the staircase, step-by-step.

The story of the Slinky began when Richard James dropped a tension spring and noticed how it kept moving. He told his wife Betty, “I think I can make a toy out of this,” and so began his two-year search for the best steel gauge and coil to use for the toy.

While James was working on the invention, his wife was working on furthering the idea by coming up with a name. Betty stumbled upon a Swedish word that means “traespiral” – sleek or sinuous. That word was “Slinky”.

The invention was complete and a name had been picked; the next step for this inventing duo was to present their toy at an event at the Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the 1945 Christmas season.

They were nervous and unsure as to how the public would take to their invention. Would they like it? Would they think it was fun? Would it be a success?

With all of these questions swirling in their brains, they finally convinced a friend who was in attendance to buy their first Slinky.

However, it turned out that they didn’t have to convince their friend to purchase their product, because 400 were sold during the 90-minute Gimbels event.

In fact, in the first two years of production, James and his wife’s company sold 100 million Slinkys.

The Slinky’s story shows inventors far and wide that pre-conceived notions and pre-judgements of your invention are nothing but a layer of fog that’s clouding your journey’s progress down the road of innovation.

So, if you have an idea, believe in it and follow that dream, because you could one day be like the inventor of the Slinky.

Set aside all pre-judgements of your invention idea and, just like a Slinky, start at the top of a staircase and work your way from step-to-step to reach your goals.

If you’re one of the many people that spend more time in their car than in their house, Ford’s latest patent could make your commute a little bit homier!

Recently, Ford patented a concept for an autonomous car that can reconfigure its seats so that passengers in the front can face those in the rear, much like living room seating.

The patent drawing showcases a myriad of seat styles that can be altered to a person’s liking. For instance, a bench can be folded so that it’s either facing the rear or the front of the vehicle or a person can tuck their front seats under the dashboard for a comfortable foot rest.

Furthermore, the seats are on a swivel and can fold while the vehicle is in motion. Even the steering wheel can be stored in the dashboard for more space and added comfort!

The ultimate goal of Ford’s self-driving vehicle is that passengers can sit back and relax while their car takes them to their desired destination.

The idea behind Ford’s latest patent is reminiscent of the seating in the Mercedes-Benz’s futuristic autonomous concept that was revealed early this year at the International CES.

Though this is an innovative concept, you shouldn’t expect to see this vehicle in the near future. In fact, fully-autonomous vehicles are still a ways away from use due to regulatory and technological obstacles.

In the meantime, check out this short video from Bloomberg Business to learn more about Ford’s latest patent:

In our industry, it is widely known that inventions are always evolving. After all, inventors are constantly finding Better Ways to do things, right?

Recently, we saw another example of an invention that continues to evolve and we just couldn’t help but share it!

The Lexus Hoverboard. Image: wired.com

Luxury vehicle maker Lexus has just released a working hoverboard. The skateboard-esque invention uses superconductors and magnets to pull riders away from gravity, allowing them to zoom through the air like Marty McFly! While the ride is not nearly as effortless as it appeared in Back to the Future, the Lexus Hoverboard has passed initial product testing, proving that, yes, we may actually be able to fly through the air Jetson-style!

Our interests in this story are not purely to satisfy our inner child; our friends over at Inventionland have worked on a couple products that work similarly to the hoverboard concept! Remember our client, John’s BikeBoard? This outdoor enthusiast came up with an idea that combined two of his favorite alternative sports, biking and skateboarding. Imagine if this product was innovated to have hovering capabilities!

Then, there was our client, Kurt’s Hover Creeper. This innovative product actually gave a lift to mechanics everywhere, so that they could hover over imperfect garage floors to easily complete auto repairs. At the time that the product was released, it was necessary to power its air compressor via a wall outlet. But, what if the Lexus Hoverboard technology was used to give the Hover Creeper an additional lift?

It is this kind of forward thinking that fosters new inventions every day, which is why we couldn’t help but get excited about the Lexus Hoverboard’s successful product test! If you haven’t seen the Lexus Hoverboard in action yet, check it out here:

And, the Lexus Hoverboard isn’t the only recent technology that’s pushing for faster individualized transportation. A Japanese engineer has innovated a battery-powered board that is no larger than a laptop! Check out this personalized transporter that has been deemed the WalkCar here:

Here’s to two exciting new inventions that continue to prove there’s always a Better Way!

With summer break right around the corner, people everywhere will be heading to their vacation destinations. Sometimes, these getaways are just too far for a person to drive, so they have to take to the sky to reach their paradise.

Each year, there are new, innovative invention ideas that are geared toward the airline industry. Whether it’s new technology or designs, these ideas continue to fly high.

Today, we are going to take a look at a few of the latest innovative designs that are ready to take off! Let’s take a look!

Dual user armrest- Perhaps the bane of most travelers existence is the awkward encounters that ensue because of armrests. Who gets the armrest? How do you bargain with a stranger? These questions plus many more might be a thing of the past with this invention. James S.H. Lee is the Director of Paperclip Design Limited, Hong Kong, received honors for his designs that work to find a solution to the battle for which flyer gets the armrest by giving one to both!

This invention design is inspired by the shape of a paperclip and provides two armrests in one single space; one above and one below which are both part of a single, smooth-curved unit. Although this invention design won the Crystal Cabin Award in 2009 for its innovation, it is still in the works and only time will tell if this is the end of one battle and the beginning of another. Who will get the top or bottom tier of the armrest?

Take a seat- Whether it’s a short flight or a long flight, chances are, you would like some sort of comfort from your seat. One innovation in particular, known as The Thompson Aero Cozy Suite is a new invention design for those who fly in the economy class. The rows of seats are staggered so that the passengers are slightly set back from one another. The “suite” style seats add an extra layer of privacy and personal space, however, it will use about the same space that is needed for traditional seating. Although this may sound like a solution to the woes of people invading your personal space while flying, this aviation invention may never actually see the inside of an airplane cabin. But, only time will tell!

Flying toward the future- Despite the fact that this airline invention may be decades away, Airbus’ invention idea of the Concept Cabin doesn’t align with the traditional cabin classes that we see today. In fact, the Business and Economy class are replaced by zones. These zones pinpoint more individual needs such as relaxing, playing games, interacting with others, or even holding business meetings with people on the ground. The bionic structure of the cabin, along with its responsive membrane, combines panoramic views with an integrated network that runs through it. This network can identify and respond to the specific needs of each passenger. Additionally, this invention design offers different levels of experience for the traveler within each zone. This would allow for airlines to achieve the price differential they need in order to operate a successful business. Although this seems like a cool idea, this innovative invention design is still decades away from coming to fruition!

Just like any invention, these aviation design ideas look to offer solutions to problems that have existed for quite some time in the airline industry. Problems such as who gets the armrest to maintaining your personal space on an airplane may soon become a thing of the past. Although it’s uncertain if any of these inventions will actually make it to mass production, one thing is for sure, these invention ideas are flying high with innovation!

Most inventions are created out of necessity to find a solution to a problem. But, how about those inventions that came to be because of a not-so-good situation.

Today, we are going to take a look at five products whose invention stories might not have gotten their start as one would think! Nonetheless, let’s get started and take a quick look at these great inventions that came to fruition from some interesting circumstances!

Scrabble– Surprisingly enough, this fun family board game got its start during the Great Depression. Since Alfred Mosher Butts was out of work, he decided that he wanted to invent a board game; so, that’s exactly what he did. After conducting research on his own, he found that games fell into three categories: number games (dice and bingo); move games (chess and checkers); and word games (anagrams). So, he decided to combine all three elements in to one game that included the vocabulary skills of crossword puzzles and anagrams with a component of chance. The result was Scrabble. But, at the time, this game was first named “Lexico,” only to be changed later by Butts to “Criss-Cross Words.”

Fender Guitars- Now a hot commodity in the music industry, this invention got its start from humble beginnings. Fender guitars are another byproduct of the Great Depression. When Leo Fender lost his job, he didn’t lose his inventor’s spirit. He borrowed $600 and opened Fender Radio Service. He then began to play around with sound products and ultimately decided to design and invent his own line of steel guitars and amplifiers. His guitar, which was dubbed the “broadcaster,” soon became the first six string one pickup Fender guitar that we know today!

Computers- This invention that we use every single day came to be during World War II when the United States military needed powerful help with ballistic research. From that necessity, ENIAC, or Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, was invented. ENIAC was the first programmable general-purpose electronic digital computer that was built by the U.S. during WWII. Known as the “Giant Brain” in the press, this invention at the time was designed with a specific purpose in mind, to compute values for artillery range tables.

Calculus- Despite the fact that this invention might have single-handedly ruined your GPA or was the bane of your existence in high school, you can thank Isaac Newton for calculus. At the young age of 23, Newton discovered and developed the principles of calculus while at his mother’s farm between 1665 and 1667 after his university was closed because of an outbreak of the plague. Newton dubbed his invention as “the science of fluxions.”

Tabasco Sauce- Some people add it to almost everything that they eat to get that extra kick of spice and flavor. The invention idea for tabasco sauce stems back to the bland and monotonous diet of the Reconstruction South. During that time, Edmund McIlhenny decided to take matters into his own hands and invent a pepper sauce that would give food a nice kick. He selected and crushed the reddest peppers from his plants and them mixed them with Avery Island salt and aged the mixture for 30 days in crockery jars and barrels. Once the first 30 days had elapsed, he then added French white wine vinegar to the aged mixture and let it meld for another 30 days. This tabasco sauce invention process still holds true to this day, except now, the aging period is much longer!

So, in honor of National Inventors Month, we wanted to take a look at those ideas that came from less than ideal situations. Whether an idea came out of boredom, necessity or simply to find a better way to do something, invention ideas are constantly evolving from human experience.

Although these are just a few examples, we have to admit that the invention world is ever-changing, yet always interesting!

After a long winter, golfers around the nation are slowly but surely getting back into the swing of things. This year, much like in year’s past, there are a slew of new, innovative inventions that are geared toward the sport of golf.

It just so happens that the 2014 Masters is underway today; so, we thought, what better way to tee off this prestigious tournament than with a blog about some new golf inventions? Let’s start with some innovative technology that can be used the next time you hit the links.

In an effort to better their game, golfers are always looking for new inventions to help them play their best. There is one invention in particular that can help golfers gain a newfound sense of confidence and accuracy on the course; and, that is through the innovation of range finders.

The range finder informs the golfer of their yardage for more than just the flagstick. Additionally, this invention gives golfers a better grasp at the distance between targets and is accurate to within a few yards of the mark. This invention comes in handy for those golfers who don’t trust the yardage markers located on the course.

On par with the range finder, there is another invention that is geared toward helping golfers make the most of their time on the green. A golf GPS is an innovation that is frequently being used by golfers today. This global positioning device can help a golfer better navigate the golf course, in addition to recording and saving their scores and statistics. Furthermore, these systems usually include a map of the course, which marks your location on the green and the precise distances between you, your ball and the hole. For those advanced systems, they even provide satellite images of the course. But, if you’d rather have a more compact golf GPS, there are apps that can be downloaded to your mobile device. And, in the realm of wearable technology, companies are inventing their own innovation in the form of a golf GPS watch, too!

Golfing isn’t just about the actual sport, it’s also about the fashion and Nike is never short on innovative golf-wear inventions. The Nike Lightweight Innovation Color Polo is a perfect example. The framework of this polo includes a new seam construction that allows for optimal movement. Rather than stitched, the seam is bonded so that it lies more closely to the body. Designers even shifted the seam towards the upper back, so that it wouldn’t run across the shoulders. This invention design allows for maximized movement through the swing, free of interferences!

From head to toe, golfers want to look their best and the latest innovation in the form of spikeless golf shoes is no exception! There has been an evolution of sorts in the world of golf shoes over the years. Now, spikeless shoes are overshadowing plastic spikes as plastic spikes once overshadowed metal spikes in the 1990s.

These shoes are equipped with nubs on the soles that are specifically designed to support the foot and make the shoes stay connected to the ground when golfers swing his or her club. This makes for good traction, which then enables the golfer to swing without slipping on the green.

These features play an important role in keeping the golfer from getting injured and can help improve their performance by enhancing the distribution of the golfer’s body weight to his or her feet. Let’s not forget spikeless golf shoes are fashionable and mimic the look and style of a fashionable pair of athletic shoes.

From inventions that measure distances on the green and everything in between and innovative, fashionable clothing, whether you are an average Joe or a PGA Pro, these inventions are helping golfers far and wide refine their game!

The wheels are always turning in the minds of car innovators each year. Each car company wants to change the pace of the game and come out with the best and most innovative inventions for their vehicles.

With innovation and technology at the core of their invention efforts each year, car owners and auto-enthusiasts alike are always interested in the latest and greatest additions to their favorite cars.

This year has been no different and it already has been filled with many innovations. Today, we want to take a look at a few in particular.

Auto Lane Keeping- Staying in your own lane of traffic is important not only for your safety, but also for the safety of others on the road. That is why carmakers like Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz are bringing the self-driving car a little bit closer to fruition in 2014. This invention will be made available thanks to systems that will leverage cameras and sensors in order to keep an electric eye on the road ahead. This technology will automatically make minor steering adjustments and help keep the car centered between highway lane markers.

HondaVAC- Minivans are the perfect vehicles for big or growing families. Not only are they spacious, the 2014 Honda Odyssey is now equipped with a built-in vacuum cleaner in the rear cargo area. The vacuum comes with a replaceable filter, canister bag and attachments that reach into every corner of the cabin. This is a good way to get those pesky Cheerios out of every nook and cranny of your vehicle!

Hidden door handles- Now, this innovation caters to the design side of 2014 auto inventions. The Jaguar F-Type sports car is equipped with door handles that remain flush with the bodywork and do not deploy until they are touched or the car is unlocked by way of a key fob. Once the car is set in motion, the handles then retract back into the doors to keep with the sleek, aerodynamic design.

Automatic brake hold- Although this might sound like a small problem as opposed to other problems in life, keeping your foot on the brake for an extended period of time at a long stop light or train crossing gets tiring. That is why the Acura RLX luxury sedan’s latest invention aims to solve that problem with the automatic brake hold. This system is able to keep the brakes engaged for up to ten minutes.

i-Key- Old-fashioned dangling keys are a thing of the past. Infiniti’s 2014 luxury sedan now allows up to four motorists to customize a variety of operation parameters. Once these measures are set, a user can be recognized via his or her key fob. It will then adjust everything from the position of the seat, mirror and climate control settings to even their favorite radio stations and previous navigation destinations.

From safety to cleaning and a sleek design to a smart key, these are just a few innovative examples of how inventions are changing the game in the auto industry. Each year, the inventions get bigger, better and more clever. Who knows, at this rate, one day we might be traveling around like the Jetsons’ in flying cars!
