Mixing concrete or mortar often begins with a simple but physically demanding task: lifting a heavy bag, cutting it open, controlling the dust and directing the dry material into a mixing container. For masonry professionals, contractors and serious do-it-yourselfers, repeating that process can add strain, mess and lost time to an already demanding job.

Masonry professional Raymond saw an opportunity to approach the task differently. His idea became the Super Splitter, a concrete bag splitter designed to use a built-in serrated blade and gravity to open a bag of dry material and direct the contents into two five-gallon buckets. The Everyday Challenge Behind the Idea

Anyone who has worked with bagged concrete, mortar or similar dry materials knows the routine. A bag must be moved into position, opened and emptied without losing control of the contents. Traditional methods may require a worker to balance the bag over a wheelbarrow or mixing area while using a utility knife or another cutting tool. The awkward posture, weight of the material and airborne dust can make the task uncomfortable and inefficient.

Raymond’s experience in masonry gave him a clear view of the problem. Rather than accepting the process as just another difficult part of the job, he began thinking about a hands-free concrete bag opening tool that could simplify the first step of mixing. His goal was to create a safer, faster and more controlled way to split a bag and collect the material.

How the Super Splitter Works

The Super Splitter is built around a straightforward principle: position the bag over a serrated blade and let the weight of the material help open it. As the bag separates, the dry contents are funneled into two five-gallon buckets below. This approach gives users an alternative to manually cutting and holding a heavy bag over a wheelbarrow or mixing container.

The concept brings several functions together in one product:

• A built-in serrated blade helps split the bag open.
• Gravity assists with opening and emptying the bag.
• The design directs material into two five-gallon buckets.
• The setup supports a more controlled, hands-free process.

The result is a focused solution for a familiar jobsite challenge. Instead of adding unnecessary complexity, the concept uses the bag’s own weight and a carefully arranged structure to change how the material is opened and collected.

Turning Jobsite Experience Into a Product Idea

Many product ideas begin with a moment of frustration, but moving from an observation to a developed product requires more than recognizing the problem. The inventor must define what the product should do, how people may use it and which design features are central to the solution.

For the Super Splitter, Raymond’s knowledge of masonry helped establish the core requirements. The product needed to accommodate a heavy bag of dry material, create a clean opening and direct the contents into common jobsite containers. Those requirements provided a practical foundation for the design and development work.

With assistance from Davison, Raymond’s initial idea was developed into a product design centered on the serrated splitting blade and two-bucket collection system. The process connected his real-world understanding of the task with product development expertise, helping translate the idea into a form that could be evaluated and refined.

There is nothing better than hanging at a picnic with family and friends during the 4th of July. Sunshine, food, drinks, friends, and bees. Wait, what? Bees? Yes, bees, even though no one invited them to the party, they are one sure thing that will bring your picnic to a screeching halt if you get stung. This is when inventor inspiration comes into play for our Davison inventor, Ziggy.

As Ziggy sat, enjoying a picnic on a beautiful summer day, his attention was pulled from a summer daydream, by bees! He watched as the bees and flies surrounded the open cans of soda on the picnic table in front of him. He sat anxiously watching as the bees crawled in and out of the open soda cans, warning others as they went to take a sip. This got Ziggy thinking, anyone could walk up, grab their soda thinking they are going to quench their thirst but instead they are stung by a bee! As Ziggy continued to watch the bees he ultimately thought “there must be a better way.”

On that bright sunny day, at a picnic with his friends, Ziggy thought “I can fix this everyday problem”…. And the Can Pump and Pour, Fizz Keeper was born.

When Ziggy first brought his idea to Davison, we applied the Davison Inventing Method. We enhanced his idea, not only would his product seal open soda cans, but it would also keep the fizz in the soda for up to a week! We then presented it to a company that decided to include it in its product line. We successfully negotiated a license agreement and the company agreed to pay him a royalty on each unit sold for the life of the product. His invention has sold millions of units and he has made a profit on it. His invention comes in Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and regular packaging. It has sold in Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond and numerous other big box stores.

“It’s just another wonderful example of how an idea comes to be!” said founder Mr. George Davison (“Mr. D”), excited to venture to The Container Store following great news for Davison client Jennifer’s Hanger Pocket Accessory Organizer product, which keeps clothes and accessories neatly organized.

“We found out that the product has also been private-labeled by The Container Store!” said Mr. D, noting that Jennifer’s Hanger Pockets have already found success in versions available through other stores.

Upon learning this news, Mr. D took a special trip to The Container Store’s Pittsburgh, PA location, which opened last October, following a private preview party. It was an exciting moment for Mr. D at the store as he prepared to give a special shout to Jennifer on the success of her invention idea.

At Davison, there’s not much sweeter than when we can help a client inventor fine-tune their ideas and turn them into new products. By guiding a client and their invention idea through our product development process, the ultimate hope is for product success.

So, what is sweeter? How about when products begin selling in major big-box retailers?

Just this week, the Davison licensing department announced that client Justin’s dessert carrier idea has made its way to Bed Bath & Beyond – online and within 35 select brick-and-mortar stores across the nation!

It’s a huge win for Managing Senior Directors of Licensing Matt and Bob and client Justin, who’ve been working to bring the dessert carrier such success since 2012. In reality, this further bit of success is just another piece of the success pie as Justin’s dessert carrier had initially been licensed to Love Cooking Company who later relaunched the product under their David Tutera Decadent Delights collection, after solidifying a partnership with the celebrity wedding and entertaining expert in 2015.

“Love Cooking informed me that the entire David Tutera Decadent Delights line is now available for sale at Bed Bath & Beyond online!” said Matt. As you can imagine, this news really helped to jumpstart Matt’s week and we couldn’t be happier for client Justin!

According to Matt, Justin’s dessert carrier and the rest of Love Cooking Company’s entire David Tutera Decadent Delights collection will be tested in the 35 select Bed Bath & Beyond stores through the month of November. If all goes well, the line could be featured on Bed Bath & Beyond store shelves indefinitely!
