It’s hard to believe but another month is coming to a close and we cannot think of a more motivational way to say goodbye to the month of March than by taking a final moment to recognize Women’s History Month and to celebrate some of the most innovative women we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with… our very own female inventors!

What could be more motivational than seeing some of the success these innovative female inventors have achieved? Here are just a few of the most motivational women inventors that we’ve worked with. To hear the stories behind their invention ideas, simply click on their respective product names:

If you don’t patent your product, you never have to make the ingredients public – a simple way to keep your secret recipe under lock and key. But, that doesn’t mean competitors won’t make a run at your throne.

DR. PEPPER

Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper, too? That won’t be happening for aspiring soda-making rivals anytime soon, because another soft drink with a famously secret formula is Dr. Pepper, which is made from 23 natural and artificial flavors. Only three people are said to be privy to the recipe, which was invented in 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas, and is kept locked in a vault in company headquarters in nearby Plano.

The company has gone on the record to deny one common guess at an ingredient: There is no prune juice in Dr Pepper. – Yahoo

WD-40

The world’s best known household lubricant got its secret agentesque name in 1953 from its inventor, Norm Larsen, and it stands for “Water Displacer—40th attempt.” An article in The Wall Street Journal reported that the formula is in a bank vault and has only been taken out twice—when changing banks and on the product’s 50th birthday, when CEO Garry Ridge rode on a horse into Times Square while wearing a suit of armor and carrying the formula. He said the company mixes the concentrate in three locations, then distributes it to aerosol manufacturing partners worldwide.

The company reveals what’s not in the secret formula on its FAQ page: WD-40 Multi-Use Product does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, graphite, or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). – Yahoo

KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken)

KFC’s “Secret Recipe of 11 Herbs and Spices” for its original fried chicken recipe is nearly as famous as the former Kentucky Fried Chicken ad slogan “finger lickin’ good.” A section of the company’s website is now devoted to spreading the lore about the spice blend. It states that Colonel Harland Sanders kept his recipe in his mind and used to carry the mixture in his car, but today it’s kept under lock and key in a Louisville, Ky., safe. One company blends part of the spice recipe, and another company mixes the rest, so that neither party has the entire recipe. The Colonel commented how low-security of an operation he and his wife, Claudia, ran when he was starting out. “After I hit the road selling franchises for my chicken, that left Claudia behind to fill the orders for the seasoned flour mix. She’d fill the day’s orders in little paper sacks with cellophane linings and package them for shipment. Then, she had to put them on a midnight train.”

Many reverse-engineered recipes for KFC-style fried chicken include speculation that the flavor-enhancing additive MSG is part of the secret mix. Others claim the distinctive KFC chicken experience owes a lot to the pressure-frying technique, which is patented. — Yahoo

I think all Americans can agree, when it comes to the delicious seared meats and sides we enjoy this holiday – we’re not going to quibble over a 200+ year-old argument. Instead, let’s celebrate the fun facts that make the Fourth of July a truly remarkable feast of the senses.

More than 1 in 4: The chance that the hot dogs and pork sausages consumed on the Fourth of July originated in Iowa. The Hawkeye State was home to 19 million hogs & pigs as of March 1, 2011.

6.8 billion pounds: Total production of cattle and calves in Texas in 2010. Chances are good that the beef hot dogs, steaks and cheese burgers on your backyard grill came from the Lone Star State, which accounted for about one-sixth of the nation’s total production.

6:  Number of states in which the value of broiler chicken production was $1 billion or greater between December 2009 and November 2010. There is a good chance that one of these states — Georgia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi or Texas — is the source of your barbecued chicken.

Over 1 in 3: The odds that your side dish of baked beans originated from North Dakota, which produced 36 percent of the nation’s dry, edible beans in 2010. Another popular Fourth of July side dish is corn on the cob. Florida, California, Georgia, Washington and New York together accounted for 68 percent of the fresh market sweet corn produced nationally in 2010.

Please Pass the Potato:  Potato salad and potato chips are popular food items at many Fourth of July barbecues. Approximately half of the nation’s spuds were produced in Idaho or Washington state in 2010.

More than 3/4:  Amount of the nation’s head lettuce production in 2010 that came from California. This lettuce may end up in your salad or on your burger.

7 in 10:  The chances that the fresh tomatoes in your salad came from Florida or California, which combined accounted for 71 percent of U.S. fresh market tomato production last year.

Florida: The state that led the nation in watermelon production last year (750 million pounds).

81 million:  Number of Americans who said they have taken part in a barbecue during the previous year. It’s probably safe to assume a lot of these events took place on Independence Day.

This year’s theme is thanks to a very recent phenomenon… the number of women in American colleges now outnumbers the number of men!  Read more about this year’s theme and the journey that women took to get to the head of the class at the National Women’s History Project webpage!

And, talk about empowering…  Sarah Blakely, the inventor of Spanx, is the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire!  What are Spanx?  They’re body-shaping innovations that range from undergarments to swimsuits, acitvewear and men’s undershirts!

Just like every inventor, Blakely’s invention has a great story to accompany it as well.  According to Spanx.com, “… Blakely was getting ready for a party when she realized she didn’t have the right undergarment to provide a blemish-free look under white pants.  Armed with scissors and sheer genius, she cut the feet off her control top pantyhose and the Spanx revolution began!”

The company now offers over 200 products; but, don’t be fooled.  Like many inventors, Blakely’s first attempt at success ended in failure.  But, that certainly didn’t stop her!

“People have million dollar and billion dollar ideas daily; and, you have to trust your gut.  Go for it and if you fail at it, that’s great… because it just means… change something, do something a little bit different.  I mean, every failure is definitely a gift and it should just not stop us in our tracks,” said Blakely.
