At Davison, it’s all about finding “a better way.” Founder George Davison created his 9-step inventing method to help everyday idea people with a more efficient and affordable way to invent. However, it’s not just about creating things for the sake of creating things. It’s about finding solutions to problems. It’s about designing inventions and innovations that have the power to change lives.

Finding “a better way” to change lives is really at the heart of what we do here at Davison. How can we help and how can we give back? During the end-of-year holiday season, this concept of “giving back” takes on an additional meaning.

This holiday season, our very own founder, Mr. Davison, contributed to a notable community cause with a donation to Variety® – the Children’s Charity, which holds an annual Anniversary Gala in Pittsburgh each winter to raise funds to empower children with disabilities.

Variety Chief Executive Officer Charles LaVallee was quick to express thanks to Mr. Davison for his support of the gala in an emotion-filled letter, which noted that all funds raised from the gala help provide equipment that has the power to give children with special needs the opportunity to participate in typical childhood experiences. In particular, this year’s 89th Anniversary Gala included the “My Bike” parade, which highlights a Variety program that grants customized adaptive bikes to children with special needs.

Tracy, the mother of a child who rode his innovative adaptive bike in the “My Bike” parade, explained what the end of year gift meant to her and her son, Gage.

“When we went to get Gage fitted for his new bike, he was truly excited and felt safe and comfortable. It made my heart smile to watch him accomplish another milestone. He is so excited about receiving his bike. He has all these plans for going on bike rides with friends!” said Tracy.

As we bring the holiday season and 2016 to a close, we encourage the innovators, inventors and everyday idea people of the world to find “a better way.” What can you do in your community? How can you give back? What can we create that makes life better for all? We hope to help you with all of your innovative and life-changing ideas in 2017.

Inventing is about more than just having an idea… It’s about taking a chance.

This notion is something that the Directors of New Products at Davison preach to each potential client every day. It’s about taking that next step to give your product idea a chance at moving forward. As they say, if you don’t try, you’ll never know.

Founder Mr. George Davison (“Mr. D”), understands this notion all too well, as he’s continued to take that chance again and again, failing his way forward to create his best invention, the Davison® Inventing Method.

Mr. D dared to invent. Since 1989, he and the talented team at Davison inspire other idea people to do the same. Just take a look at any of the client videos in our Dare to Invent webisode series.

Not only are these webisodes available online to inspire the inventor within, but many may not know that they’re also played during client visits to Mr. D’s 61,000 square foot creative facility, Inventionland, where the theater just got outfitted with a new “Dare to Invent” marquee sign!

This newly installed sign can be viewed as a message of inspiration for idea people everywhere. See it at Inventionland during a Davison client tour. Why take a Davison client tour of Inventionland?

A truly eye-opening experience.

Not only do clients get to hear great stories, but they come to understand even further some of the hurdles that must be overcome when trying to bring a product to market.

An inspirational journey.

Visitors enjoy learning about what inspired Mr. D to create Inventionland and how his own personal journey has led to such an amazing facility and inspiring organization.

Dare to invent! Confidentially submit your idea here to get started on your inventing journey. Once connected, ask your director about an Inventionland tour for further inspiration.

Since 1989, Davison® has helped idea people turn their ideas into new products using our nine-step method that has proven to be A better way to invent®. For over twenty-five years, people have trusted our team of professionals to work through their ideas and hopefully get them to a stage where new inventions and innovations can be presented to corporations, manufacturers and retailers for possible licensing.

It’s not an easy process, but it’s a rollercoaster that many find to be worth the ride! Let’s see how the Davison licensing department does it.

According to Licensing’s Bob and Matt, it’s all about staying true to our inventing method. How can we match our clients’ ideas with the right companies’ product lines and turn them into products that are ready to license? This question is only answered with a whole lot of work, research and relationship-building! Here’s a snapshot of just a few things our licensing team thinks about and works towards on a daily basis:

Get in tune with the company

It all starts with finding out more about a company’s mission, manufacturing style, product lines and their competition.

“We want to know where their focus is, so we can drive more products to best suit their needs,” said Bob and Matt. “They need to know who they’re up against – and so do we!”

Learn the areas of attack

“We want to know what areas they want to attack. Then, we can focus on the client ideas that fit those categories so we can make an impact to the company as quickly as possible in their space,” said this Davison licensing duo. It’s all about knowing what a company does and does not want to see.

Find out the best ways to integrate

Having knowledge and background on a potential licensing partner only takes us so far. Then, it’s time to figure out the best ways to integrate client ideas into these companies’ lines.

“We want to know their business so we can develop ideas into product samples that integrate into their organization,” said Davison CEO and founder Mr. George Davison. “The Davison way to invent is all about integration!”

Are you ready to move forward with your idea with the help of Davison and our licensing department? Confidentially submit your idea today!

Copyright Davison, 2016

The typical Davison client project is not licensed, sold in stores or profitable.

“Fail your way forward.” This may be some of the greatest advice Davison founder and CEO Mr. George Davison has for any inventor. This advice is something he has learned and followed himself during his almost thirty years of inventing.

Flash back to 1987. “In 1987, I could only dream to be in dialogue with the manufacturer and the retailer all at the same time!” said Mr. Davison, who was determined to do just that – fail his way forward, develop a better way to invent, and establish the right relationships to get products to store shelves.

Fast forward to present day when just last week, Mr. Davison joined our friends from Inventionland and Jokari/US, Inc. at The Container Store’s new Pittsburgh location for an exclusive, invite-only preview party held before the actual grand opening of the store!

“There I was with Jokari and buyers from The Container Store, walking the floor!” said Mr. Davison realizing this unique opportunity that only presents itself after building years of industry relationships.

It’s these industry relationships and insider knowledge that bring value to the services provided by Davison to clients every day so that – just like Mr. Davison – our clients, too, have a better chance at finding success on their inventing journeys.

At The Container Store preview, there was much excitement after seeing client Jennifer’s Hanger Pockets on store shelves in The Container Store’s own private label packaging!

It’s another solid story of success for client Jennifer who, you may recall, earlier this year had her invention packaged under Jokari’s Paula Deen Everyday Collection!

Here’s to great inventors having their dreams come true at The Container Store!

Every day, we are faced with a multitude of decisions. From the simplest, like what shoes you’ll wear that day, to the more difficult decisions, like deciding if today is the day that you’ll take the steps to chase after your dreams. As the clock ticks on, we are constantly uncovering answers to questions.

Deciding if you want to pursue your dreams isn’t an easy decision to make. There are a myriad of emotions that come rushing through, like uncertainty and anxiousness in not knowing what to expect when making this type of decision.

Though this can seem overwhelming and perhaps make you hesitant to take a chance, one thing that may be more plaguing is the feeling of regret – the regret of not knowing whether or not you could have succeeded.

Though failure could be the outcome, we’ve been taught time and time again that failure is a learning experience and our very own founder and CEO George Davison can attest to the notion of failing your way forward.

So, when idea people make the decision to pursue their dreams and choose Davison to join them on their journey, it’s always motivating to receive their feedback once they’ve reviewed their Pre-Development Portfolios.

We value client feedback because it gives a well-rounded understanding of how we can improve our inventing method in order to help idea people everywhere potentially make their dreams a reality.

Here are just a few examples of the recent feedback we’ve received from our clients:

“I was blown out of the water by it.” – Tommie T.

“Truly amazed at all the research and how well thought out the Portfolio is…Thank you.” – Zina S.

“I would not know how to move forward without it.” – Daisy P.

“It was easy to understand and answered my questions on the process.” – Michael P.

If you’re ready to make your inventing dream a reality, submit your invention idea today!

You have a goal in mind. You dream about it. It’s a nagging thought. It’s always on the top of your mind. It’s a constant; but, can it become a reality?

We all have dreams and aspirations; however, it takes desire to turn them into reality.

As the popular saying from Eric Thomas goes, “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.”

In the invention industry, desire is what sparks the fire; it’s what helps a person persevere despite the ups and the downs of the process. Desire keeps an idea person excited and willing to proceed with their dream, urging them to do what it takes to make it a reality.

Desire is fueled by your why. Everyone’s why is different and that’s what makes it unique. What fuels your desire to relentlessly chase after your dreams? What’s the driving force behind why you want this product to succeed?

For our CEO and founder, George Davison, his why was fueled by failure and his story of passion and desire has become a great example of how to fail forward.

For some, failure is the end of the road. For others, like George Davison, it was a chance to find an alternative path.

“Nothing happens without establishing a deep desire inside of you. Your first quest should be to understand yourself and what you desire to accomplish,” said Mr. Davison. ”

Desire is in the driver’s seat of the invention journey, but before the gas can be applied, you have to determine which map you’ll follow, how you’ll handle roadblocks and how you’ll navigate the unbeaten path.

“Desire… it is the single most important step if you choose to be an innovator, inventor or entrepreneur,” said Mr. Davison.

Will your desire burn strong and bright enough for you to submit your invention idea, today?

At the end of June, we published a blog post that covered the dawn of color TVs. In this blog, we talked about the very first commercial TV program that was broadcast in color by CBS more than 64 years ago.

Today, we’re sharing our founder’s connection to one of the key inventors of color TV! Davison and inventing go hand-in-hand. After all, our products have sold on more than 1,200 retail store shelves and online.

So, it’s really no surprise that our very own CEO and founder, Mr. George Davison, would somehow have a connection to a man who helped invent the color TV.

“The inventor of the color picture tube is a friend of mine. He and I are in a picture together in my office with a wonderful and impacting letter,” said Mr. Davison.

In this letter, Joe Donahue talks about how George Davison has made great strides in both his career and the Davison Inventing Method.

“The progress you have made and the level of proficiency you have now achieved from that modest start is now beyond imagination. I am not only very impressed but thrilled to witness such a dynamic and constructive organization in action,” said Donahue.

If we’ve said it once, we’ll say it again; in the inventing world, things change. People are constantly working to find a better way to carry out even the most everyday tasks.

For Donahue, the idea of taking something that already exists and making it better is very familiar. Donahue, the key inventor to the color picture tubes that are found in televisions, has taken notice of our founder’s keen ability to excel in the world of inventing.

“Because of this background {talking about his experience as an inventor} I feel particularly qualified to assess the creative and productive capability of your organization. You turn out advances and inventions at a prodigious rate that is probably unmatched anywhere in the world,” said Donahue.

The Davison Inventing Method has helped many people turn their inventing dreams into a reality and it’s because of this process that we feel a great sense of pride.

After all, there’s nothing quite like seeing the Davison “D” on store shelves across the country.

“Not only do you create your own advances but you are flexible enough to help other inventors through the many precarious steps of turning their idea into a reality. Many inventors are not capable of, nor realize the importance of the steps of, patent search, patent filing, designing a product that satisfies a need and that is readily manufactured in a cost effective manner, designing functional packaging, producing realistic prototypes of the product and the packaging, and presenting the product to the key people in commercial world. Your organization is well versed in all of these areas and they provide a very worthwhile service,” he noted.

So, the next time you turn your television, you can thank Joe Donahue for the ability to watch your favorite show in color!

Copyright Davison, 2016

Davison has not provided services to Mr. Donahue and he has not been paid for his endorsement.

In previous blogs, we talked about the idea of failing forward and not letting failure derail your progress.

Our very own founder and CEO George Davison is a testament to this notion as he stayed persistent after the failed invention of his toothbrush sanitizer idea.

Though failure could have stopped him in his tracks, he decided to push forward and achieve many other great things and create many great inventions along the way.

As National Inventors Month is quickly coming to a close, we couldn’t think of a Better Way to close out this month-long celebration than by introducing George Davison’s latest invention, the Curved Bench that has recently hit the market!

And there’s no better person to share this exciting news than Mr. Davison himself!

“When I used to coach soccer, the benches were always straight and I was always frustrated because I couldn’t get my kids to rally in a half circle and focus on the coaching,” said Mr. Davison.

Recently, Mr. Davison walked on our loading dock to find his newest invention had just come in! “I [saw it and] said ‘It is! It’s here!’ I just wanted to share the news. It’s awesome!” said Mr. Davison.

Can’t you just feel the excitement?!

The Curved Bench has been licensed to Creative Outdoor Distributors and this six-seat bench is now available for purchase through both Amazon.com and Overstock.com!

As George Davison excitedly told us, this innovative product is great for a variety of activities like sporting events and sitting around a campfire with your family and friends!

Here are some more pictures for you to enjoy of Mr. Davison seeing his product for the first time!

True to Microsoft’s latest tagline, “Empowering us all,” this company – since it was started on April 4th, 1975, 41 years ago to be exact – has been empowering idea people from all corners of the earth with its technology.

The company got its start thanks to Bill Gates and Paul Allen, two childhood friends who combined their knowledge and expertise to create a company that made computer software in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The production of microprocessors and software sprouted the name for the company, “Micro-Soft.”

Though that name looks like a company that we know today despite that little hyphen, it only took three years for the hyphen to be dropped from the name. But, the hyphen wasn’t the only thing that dropped out. In fact, Gates dropped out of Harvard and Allen left his programming job in Boston to pursue their newest venture.

As with any new business, the first few years proved to be a whirlwind. In those years, the innovative duo both launched and licensed their MS-DOS operating system to IBM. Unfortunately, just as there were many highs, there were also a few lows in the beginning. One of which was the medical reason that forced Allen to leave the company.

But, despite these hurdles, Gates and Microsoft forged on and in 1985, the company unveiled their Windows operating system and went public with their announcement.

Almost instantaneously, the company stock and sales took off to over $60 million, which made Microsoft the world’s largest personal computer software company at the time.

It’s safe to say that both Gates and Allen have, in some respects, created and paved the way for the technological advancements that follow their revolutionary idea of Microsoft.

Just take Davison client Eddie Porter, for example. Porter utilized our very own mobile app service to turn his idea into a reality – the Coach’s Whiteboard app!

Thanks to innovative thinking and a passion for basketball, Porter was able to combine these two factors and work alongside our team at Davison to create a an app to help coaches everywhere draw up new plays or call up old plays to lead team members, now available on the Apple App Store.

It’s innovative thinking and a creative spirit like that of Gates, Allen and Porter that validates the notion that if you have an idea and put in the effort, you too can make things better each day.

The idea of “Fail your way forward” hits close to home here at Davison, but in a good way. Keep reading to learn more.

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas A. Edison

“Fail your way forward.” It may sound counterproductive, because failure often carries a negative connotation. In reality, failure doesn’t mean the end; failure means the beginning of something new.

Just take our founder and CEO George Davison’s story, for example.

It all began in 1986 when Davison, like many people, had an idea for a product. His product was one that would prevent toothbrush germs from spreading and getting everyone in his family sick.

After two years of hard work and spending nearly every dime to his name to bring his idea to life, a major corporation beat him to the market with his idea.

This is a moment that could have stifled anyone’s dreams. And though this is what some would characterize as a failure, for Mr. Davison, he used this as ammunition to “fail forward.” How? Because it got Mr. Davison thinking, “Why didn’t other idea people have access to a similar process; an affordable idea-to-product method like the one major corporations used?”

For Mr. Davison, he saw a need and since necessity is the mother of all invention, he needed everything under one roof to invent his products in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner.

He knew there was a better way to compete; after all, inventions are made because they provide solutions to problems.

From this idea, a new method that would benefit future generations of idea people was born. This idea didn’t develop overnight; it took years of experimentation to figure out the best means to affordably transform ideas into products.

On his journey, Mr. Davison experienced his fair share of failures and successes that led him to the best approach. Over time, he found a method that worked.

After two decades of hard work, Mr. Davison developed an invention method that would forever change how product ideas became actual products. It’s this method that dubbed Mr. Davison as a “Creative Genius” by Entrepreneur Magazine.

“We’ve invented the world’s most affordable way to invent and at one time, we didn’t know if we could do that. Just like all other inventions, you have to hope that you can invent it. You have to hope that you can make it affordable. You have to hope that you can tell the story about what it is – and that gets you right back to [some of the] basic pieces of inventing,” said Mr. Davison.

Mr. Davison has shared his inventing method with us and he wants to share another piece of invaluable advice with fellow idea people:

“If you’re going to be an inventor and you have an idea that you want to get out there to the world, I would stress to you to think very carefully about your chances, as a first-time of doing everything right is pretty hard. By the way, that was me many years ago. Before I started this company, I was in my early twenties and naïve; I thought I could and unfortunately I failed miserably… It took me many years to develop a skillset and to be able to build systems, so that we could actually invent affordably and achieve the outcome we were looking for.”

If you’re ready to chase after your inventing dreams with the Davison Inventing Method, submit your invention idea today!

Copyright Davison, 2016
