In our industry, it is widely known that inventions are always evolving. After all, inventors are constantly finding Better Ways to do things, right?

Recently, we saw another example of an invention that continues to evolve and we just couldn’t help but share it!

The Lexus Hoverboard. Image: wired.com

Luxury vehicle maker Lexus has just released a working hoverboard. The skateboard-esque invention uses superconductors and magnets to pull riders away from gravity, allowing them to zoom through the air like Marty McFly! While the ride is not nearly as effortless as it appeared in Back to the Future, the Lexus Hoverboard has passed initial product testing, proving that, yes, we may actually be able to fly through the air Jetson-style!

Our interests in this story are not purely to satisfy our inner child; our friends over at Inventionland have worked on a couple products that work similarly to the hoverboard concept! Remember our client, John’s BikeBoard? This outdoor enthusiast came up with an idea that combined two of his favorite alternative sports, biking and skateboarding. Imagine if this product was innovated to have hovering capabilities!

Then, there was our client, Kurt’s Hover Creeper. This innovative product actually gave a lift to mechanics everywhere, so that they could hover over imperfect garage floors to easily complete auto repairs. At the time that the product was released, it was necessary to power its air compressor via a wall outlet. But, what if the Lexus Hoverboard technology was used to give the Hover Creeper an additional lift?

It is this kind of forward thinking that fosters new inventions every day, which is why we couldn’t help but get excited about the Lexus Hoverboard’s successful product test! If you haven’t seen the Lexus Hoverboard in action yet, check it out here:

And, the Lexus Hoverboard isn’t the only recent technology that’s pushing for faster individualized transportation. A Japanese engineer has innovated a battery-powered board that is no larger than a laptop! Check out this personalized transporter that has been deemed the WalkCar here:

Here’s to two exciting new inventions that continue to prove there’s always a Better Way!

People have been dreaming about it since Princess Leia pleaded for Obi-Wan Kenobi’s help, “You’re my only hope.” The hologram is a part of science-fiction history that may be a lot closer to reality than you’d think!

Dr. Roel Vertegaal of Queen’s University’s School of Computing in Kingston, Ontario, is on the cutting edge of hologram technology:

“The technology Dr. Vertegaal and researchers at the Queen’s Human Media Lab have developed is called TeleHuman — and while it’s bulky, it works. All you need is a six-foot tall glass tube with a convex mirror inside, and a 3D projector. Two people simply stand in front of their own life-size cylindrical pods and talks to a 3D hologram-like images of each other. Cameras capture and track 3D video and convert it into the life-size image – although for the full effect you need several 3D cameras to capture both back and front of each speaker. Since the 3D video image is visible 360 degrees around the Pod, the person can walk around it to see the other person’s side or back,” according to an article on the Daily Mail Online.

Hologram technology is not as new as you may think — or at least a semblance of this technology. In 1991, Sega released an arcade game called Hologram Time Traveler. The cabinet for the game was about the size of an open MRI, the gameplay was wonky and the object of the main character was unclear to say the least. But, it looked awesome, especially to an 11-year-old forced to go to dinner with his parents. Check out a video of it here.

In 2012, hologram technology (maybe not hologram) brought Tupac back to life for the crowd at the Coachella festival by Digital Domain, which is now bankrupt.

So, is hologram technology even feasible or marketable? According to an article on squidoo, quite possibly. “While in its earliest stages of development, holographic TV is a technology that is being given serious attention from Japanese technology companies, of whom are hoping to have the technology hit the consumer market by the year 2020.

“In 2008, researchers at the University of Arizona were able to develop a breakthrough technology: the creation of an updateable 3D display. While this particular display could only be updated after several minutes, there is now hope that it can be further developed to eventually fulfill the need of updating that image several times per second — a feat that would be required for holographic TV.”

So while we are not quite on the holodeck of the Starship Enterprise, the technology required to give us an excuse to dress up like Obi Wan and communicate with other holograms might not be that far away.

If you are like most inventors, the ultimate goal for your idea is to create a product that will sell.

But one of the first problems you will face is this – an idea is not a product. In order to create a product from an idea, an inventor must be willing to devote time, energy and money to take all of the steps necessary for this to happen. In order to give your idea the best chance for success, you need to work with people who understand all the many steps to bring a product to market.

For over 20 years, Davison has helped inventors bring their ideas from the concept stage to products selling in stores. Their product development services are extremely thorough, and they work with the inventor every step along the way; from patent and product related research to designing, developing and building working prototypes and product samples. They design packaging for the product, identify manufacturers and present new products to corporations, manufacturers, and retailers for possible licensing agreements.

So, as an inventor with a great idea, you probably have a few questions regarding costs:

• Who pays for the product development services? Clients pay for initial design research, product design, prototype development, integrated retail product packaging (illustrating what the product could appear as on the retail shelf) and product sample demonstration videos.
• Who pays for licensing? Davison offers licensing representation for a fixed fee plus a 10% interest in any future royalties. However, this is not a purchase of patent or invention rights, and no purchase or partnerships are offered. To see the range of services and costs involved, visit www.davison.com/legal/aipa.html
• Are there ever cases where Davison would work on an invention for only a percentage of profits? No. Developing inventions is a very uncertain undertaking, and it would be too risky for Davison to work on any invention without some form of up-front payment.

So if you’re looking to have your new product idea prepared and presented to a corporation for possible licensing, Davison has the experience, expertise and track record you should look for in new product development services.

So you have a product idea and want to turn it into a real product selling on store shelves. But having the idea and turning it into something real are the beginning and end of a very long road. There are many steps along the way; such as product and patent searches, prototype building, and manufacturing. Most inventors don’t have the time or money to develop a new invention on their own. Therefore, a lot of inventors consider trying to sell their invention to companies that have the resources to manufacture and market the product and make it a success.

Now the question is: who is going to buy my invention?

That is a great question, and the Davison invention development process was constructed to help you find an answer to that question.

Davison is a product development company that gives inventors the tools they need to move their ideas from early-stage concepts to a professional product sample ready to present to manufacturers. However, Davison does not buy any ideas and it does not take ownership in an individual’s ideas or inventions. Rather, Davison has refined and developed a unique inventing method over the past twenty years that works with the inventor to design, engineer, build, package and present their ideas to manufacturers for possible licensing agreements. Going through these steps is critically important because manufacturers often want to see a working model or prototype. In fact, they usually want to see a product that is very close to being ready to manufacture.

If Davison is successful in finding a licensee for a product, they will also provide licensing negotiation and royalty management services. Davison offers licensing representations services for 10% or more of the future royalties. However, this is not considered a purchase of patent or invention rights and no purchase or partnerships with Davison are offered. All throughout this process, the inventor remains the owner of the invention.

So rather than buy an idea, Davison works with clients to bring their ideas to market. Whether it’s an idea that will enhance a current product, or an idea to develop a product from scratch, Davison has the experience, high quality technology, and the drive to provide professional quality invention development services.
