Back to the Future – Smart Highways
If a “smart highway” that glows in the dark, charges electric vehicles and displays weather and road conditions on its illuminated surface sounds like the setting of Marty Mcfly and Doc’s latest adventure, you’re wrong!
A Dutch design company has created a state-of-the-art concept for a 21st century highway, set to begin construction in mid-2013 in the Netherlands. The highlights of the innovative highway include lane dividers made from photoluminescent paint that recharges during daylight and glows at night, temperature sensitive paint on roadways capable of warning drivers of icy conditions, and magnetic fields under the road that would charge electric cars.
The idea was the winner of the ‘Best Future Concept’ design awards and has roused the interests of India, the United Kingdom and the United States.
