May is National Inventors Month and in the spirit of this month-long celebration, we’ve already covered the likes of some of the most famous inventors in history and the original piano man, Bartolomeo Cristofori!

Today, we’re bringing this blog closer to home and putting the spotlight on our Davison clients, who are taking the first steps in making their inventing dreams a reality!

As a company that’s committed to helping idea people from far and wide with their invention ideas, we always put a lot of stock in what are clients are saying, so that we can give the best service in return.

National Inventors Month is underway and we’re starting this month-long celebration off with some motivation – after all, it is Monday!

So, what exactly does National Inventors Month entail? The month of May is reserved for the celebration of invention and creativity, which began in 1998 by the United Inventors Association of the USA (UIA-USA), the Academy of Applied Science and Inventors’ Digest magazine.

At Davison, we take great pride in our clients who had ideas and believed in them so much that they turned to us to help make their invention dreams a reality. For us, we treat every month like it’s National Inventors Month as we champion the idea people who continue to create and innovate every day.

The purpose of National Inventors Month is to promote the inventors whose ideas have served as real contributions to the world.

Today, to kick off our celebration of all things inventing, let’s take a look at some of the motivational quotes from perhaps the most prolific inventors in history!

What better way to celebrate our industry and National Inventors Month than by discovering some of the fruits of our clients’ and our own labor?

Well, today, we’ve got news from our founder and CEO George Davison that takes our National Inventors Month celebration to a multi-branded level!

You’re may already be familiar with our clients, Gary and Ruth. Their invention, Twister Bolts, has been one of the most successful products that we’ve ever designed.

Not only do the Twister Bolts continue to sell at major hardware retailers like Lowe’s, Home Depot and Ace Hardware; but, Gary and Ruth continue to collect royalties on their Better Way to secure toilets to bathroom floors.

Maybe you’ve even seen Twister Bolts at a local hardware store before. But, what Mr. Davison has to reveal about Home Depot’s own private label, Everbilt, we can guarantee that you’ve never seen until now. In fact, now you can even see it nationwide!

Talk about some major product success! As Mr. Davison explained, once a client finds a Better Way to do something and it is designed, then licensed, it can be branded under multiple names and sell in several different stores… all at the same time!

Innovation comes in all shapes and sizes. Since it’s National Inventors Month, which is a month-long celebration of invention and creativity, we wanted to celebrate by finding some out-of-the-box innovation- and that’s exactly what we did!

What do you get when you mix 20,000 sheets of bright red paper with innovation? The answer, you might ask, is a weight-bearing bridge.

Sure, paper has been and is still used to hold inventors’ ideas, from random thoughts to sketches of their dream inventions. But, a British artist by the name of Steve Messam took this idea to a whole new level when he used 20,000 bright red sheets of paper to invent a bridge across a stream in the United Kingdom’s Lake District.

The Paperbridge project was commissioned by the Lakes Culture tourism organization and is a weight-bearing arch that’s weighted on either side with steel gabions that are filled with local stone.

The eye-catching red bridge was made from a series of “blocks.” These “blocks” were made of two reams of paper, which translates to 1,000 sheets.

In order to get the arch look, arched plywood form was used and placed between the two supports. By doing so, this allowed the blocks to be stacked in position over the water. Between each block were 1.5 degree wedges and the final wedge was hammered into the apex to create the right compression before the wood frame was removed.

You might be shocked to know that the Paperbridge was held together only by compression – not glue!

Just like any invention, there are some roadblocks and for the Paperbridge, this was ensuring that it could withstand weather, curious people and wandering animals.

In fact, the Paperbridge could withstand its own weight- or the equivalent of 60 sheep.

Why the peculiar color? Messam chose the intense red color to highlight and bring out the green of the surrounding hills to make them look even greener.

So how do these 20,000 papers stack up environmentally? Messam was careful to ensure that the total footprint was close to zero. Once the project’s 10-day lifespan ended on May 18, the paper was then taken to a recycling facility.

Right now, almost everything around you started with an idea. From that idea, an invention was born. National Inventors Month looks to celebrate those innovators, tinkerers and the creative thinkers whose ideas have enriched our lives day in and day out.

Let’s take Thomas Edison for instance. He was a famous inventor who invented the innovations that we utilize every day, like the electric light bulb and the phonograph that laid the foundation for inventions like the CD player and iPod to name a few. In his lifetime, Edison held more than 1,000 patents for his inventions!

Perhaps you are reading this blog by the assistance of glasses; you can thank Benjamin Franklin for his invention of the bifocals. Or maybe you are planning your summer vacation to a destination that is too far for you to drive. Thanks to the Wright Brothers, who successfully designed, built and flew the first powered aircraft, you can now get to your location faster, because of the invention of the airplane.

Just like these famous inventors, the inventive spirit lives within everyone. National Inventors Month is the perfect time to take the opportunity to further explore your invention ideas. Who knows, one day we might be writing a blog about how YOUR invention changed the world. But, you’ll never know if you don’t dare to invent with Davison!

Inventors who have significantly improved the way we go about everyday life are well-known: Edison, da Vinci, Franklin, etc. In hindsight, we tend to skew historical significance toward indisputable facts: “I can’t live without light bulbs! And, how about those bifocals for reading those books?” As much as inventing harkens back to history, it also alludes to the limitless possibilities of man, the American Dream and, most importantly, fun.

May is National Inventors Month, and since Davison supports inventors from all walks of life and inventions both big and small, we’d like to shine the light on some lesser-celebrated visionaries and inventions that have contributed to the betterment of the human race – and to the fun of it.

George de Mestral – Velcro
Learning to tie our shoes is a right of passage, a great gauge of how our children are advancing and another step toward their growing independence. But, until that point, George de Mestral and Velcro can be thanked for getting our children in their shoes in under four hours, so we have more time for grass cutting, dish washing and bed making! And, after a lifetime of chores, who wants to retire and waste more time tying their shoes?

Brooke Miller – Pooper-Scooper
No over-glorifying the credence of this invention: Keeps hands away from well, you know…  and, inventions like the Pooper-Scooper laid the groundwork for other familiar Davison designs, like Potty Paws!

Ron Popeil – Ron Popeil has created countless convenience products over his long inventing career and can be considered one of the founding fathers of “As Seen on TV” products.

Kevin G. Kinsella – The Basketball Return
Remember the kid down the street with all the cool gadgets who had this? We were blown away by how much more interested we were in the concept of this invention than in shooting baskets!
