Since 1989, Davison® has helped idea people turn their ideas into new products using our nine-step method that has proven to be A better way to invent®. For over twenty-five years, people have trusted our team of professionals to work through their ideas and hopefully get them to a stage where new inventions and innovations can be presented to corporations, manufacturers and retailers for possible licensing.

It’s not an easy process, but it’s a rollercoaster that many find to be worth the ride! Let’s see how the Davison licensing department does it.

According to Licensing’s Bob and Matt, it’s all about staying true to our inventing method. How can we match our clients’ ideas with the right companies’ product lines and turn them into products that are ready to license? This question is only answered with a whole lot of work, research and relationship-building! Here’s a snapshot of just a few things our licensing team thinks about and works towards on a daily basis:

Get in tune with the company

It all starts with finding out more about a company’s mission, manufacturing style, product lines and their competition.

“We want to know where their focus is, so we can drive more products to best suit their needs,” said Bob and Matt. “They need to know who they’re up against – and so do we!”

Learn the areas of attack

“We want to know what areas they want to attack. Then, we can focus on the client ideas that fit those categories so we can make an impact to the company as quickly as possible in their space,” said this Davison licensing duo. It’s all about knowing what a company does and does not want to see.

Find out the best ways to integrate

Having knowledge and background on a potential licensing partner only takes us so far. Then, it’s time to figure out the best ways to integrate client ideas into these companies’ lines.

“We want to know their business so we can develop ideas into product samples that integrate into their organization,” said Davison CEO and founder Mr. George Davison. “The Davison way to invent is all about integration!”

Are you ready to move forward with your idea with the help of Davison and our licensing department? Confidentially submit your idea today!

Copyright Davison, 2016

The typical Davison client project is not licensed, sold in stores or profitable.

At Davison, we treat every day like it’s National Inventors’ Day! Keep reading to learn more about this celebration!

This isn’t your average day. Why? Because it’s National Inventors’ Day – a day that’s reserved to recognizing the great contributions of our nation’s inventors, both past and present!

But, beyond a day to celebrate these idea people, February 11 is also Thomas Edison’s birthday. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan reserved this day to honor Edison’s birthday in “recognition of the enormous contribution inventors make to the nation and world.”

If you want to recognize National Inventors’ Day, we’ve outlined three simple ways to celebrate!

Keep tinkering

Inventions don’t come to fruition overnight. It takes trial and error and with those mishaps and redos comes the need for patience! Keep trying, keep researching and working hard and never give up! If you give up now, you’ll never know how close you were to making your dreams a reality! Who knows, you could be the mind behind the world’s next great invention!

Keep thinking

Ideas are always swirling around our heads. That’s why it’s up to us to listen to our thoughts and capture those ideas from our mind and put them onto paper. Whether it’s a napkin, a piece of scratch paper or even written in the palm of your hand, if you have an idea, don’t let it pass! Keep track of your ideas and nurture them with your thoughts and actions. An invention idea takes time and is much like a flower; give it some TLC and it could flourish into something beautiful!

Keep searching

Inventions are created as a solution to problems. Keep this in mind when you’re trying to develop your invention idea. Ask yourself:

Are there more people out there who are struggling with this same problem?

Can this idea help others?

How will this idea help people?

If you have an idea for an invention, never give up on it. Take your time and treat your journey like a staircase and move step-by-step. Some days you can go up the staircase and others you might have to go backwards. No matter what the case, keep searching for the idea that inspires you and that will help others in the long run. Investigate every idea you have, no matter how big or how small it may be!

If you have an invention idea, submit yours, today!

New Year’s resolutions are in full swing and as we work hard to keep chasing after our personal goals, it’s only natural that as human beings we have the tendency to make excuses when the going gets tough. As a result, we’ll convince ourselves that the journey will be too long and too difficult and we give up before we even start.

Rather than focusing on the negative this year, let’s continue to focus on the positive.

Today, we want to share with you three common excuses, so that you can recognize them and work around them to continue following your idea!

“I don’t know where to begin.”

You have an idea, but at this point in time that’s all you have. You don’t know where to go next or how to move forward with your invention. You know that you’ll likely need a prototype if you ever want your idea to get off the ground. This is where the Davison Inventing Method could potentially help. We work to help idea people just like you with your invention. You can begin the process by safely submitting your invention idea, here!

“I lack experience.”

Everyone has to start somewhere. Thomas Edison wouldn’t have said, “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work” had he known exactly what to do and how to do it the first time.

Knowledge comes from experience. The more you try, the more you learn; and, the more you learn, the more you can do to make your dreams come true.

At Davison, we can’t guarantee that an invention will be licensed by a corporation, but we do believe that if you’re going to pursue a new product idea, you should do it with experience behind you. We’re here to help.

“My time is limited.”

Pursuing your idea is a big commitment. It takes a lot of time to see your idea through from ideation to completion. However, don’t let the big picture scare you. Invention ideas and concepts may change over time in order to evolve, improve, and provide solutions to problems. In any situation, change may delay the process, but remember that not all change is bad. It’s often worth the time and effort to get your idea just right. At Davison, we’re here to help you through the process in seeing your idea through.

These are just three common excuses that idea people from far and wide are faced with each day. Now that you recognize them, make 2016 the year that you move past those excuses and continue down the path toward turning your inventing dream into a reality!

Host Angle Bush introduces George and Inventionland: “The company Inventionland has established a dominance as a new product and development firm that serves independent consumers and corporations to create new product ideas.

Inventionland [handles] predevelopment, development, engineering and packaging to product sample presentation. There is no other company in the world with Davison’s approach! Today, the company uses this development to produce 240 products a month. Products designed by Davison have sold in Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, Home Depot, CVS, Sears, Kmart and FAO Schwarz.”

Listen to how to develop your invention idea on BTR

“I want to talk about Inventionland. It sounds like a magical place to work,” Bush continued.

“Inventionland is really a culmination of things that happened to me as kid. I was blessed to have a very creative mother, who surrounded me with a lot of folks that were also artistic and creative, as well as business people. That saturation allowed [me] to think outside the box,” George shares.

“I have this belief; if you can inspire people and put them in a positive environment, that would help to fuel the human spirit. And today, we have about 300 people that work with us. We do tours [at Inventionland] and have about 100 to 500 children a month from our local [Pittsburgh] schools to show them how to invent and inspire them to create.”

George encourages people to do what they love and notes that human beings are “inherently creative.”

“When we’re young, people throw crayons and white pieces of paper at us and we just go at it. Then, we get older and for some reason… we think that’s just not that fun anymore.”

Davison employs people from all walks of life who are chasing their dream to be creative. “I have a lot of people who work with us who are graphic designers, photographers, backyard mechanics and engineers … find what you love and put your passion into it.”

George and Angle speak further about inventing. George gives advice, talks about successes and urges inventors to know themselves before they try to know the market.

There are a lot of theories out there about when to patent your product idea. At Davison, we follow the strategy of “BUILD BEFORE YOU PATENT,” which also happens to be the business strategy of most manufacturers. New product development is a balancing act, and the best tight-rope walkers in this industry to learn from are product manufacturers. So … logic says “THINK LIKE A MANUFACTURER.” Ask yourself, “Would a manufacturer of this product do that?”

Logically apply the protection process to your new product idea. Most patent attorneys will have you believe that patenting is the first critical step in inventing. Once you file a patent application all eyes can evaluate what you’re trying to invent and protect. This is not good! There’s nothing more disturbing than the USPTO letting “patent poachers” look at the applications before issuing patents when approximately 50% of all patent applications received are rejected. Manufacturers understand this and, in general, file for patents only after they have their new product ready for production.

Next time you’re in the store look to see how many products are not patented. Sometimes manufacturers simply determine they aren’t going to spend the time patenting simple items. You might also look at the back of a product and notice “Patent Pending.” This means patent applications were filed with the USPTO but not yet granted – it could take two years to get an issued patent. Can you imagine a manufacturer sitting around waiting two years before they try to turn a profit on their new product?

Our approach to inventing practically mirrors how manufacturers create, design and develop new products. We do NOT follow the old method of “patent first and then figure out what the product is later.” Scores of patents are rendered useless because the original design is too expensive to manufacture or is filled with design flaws. Concentrate on product design and then go the extra mile to figure out the product packaging solution before applying for a patent. Manufacturers do … so you should, as well.

Patenting can be a critical element in protecting your product; notice we said product, not idea. Invent, design, develop, package and then start considering the protection process. Our system can greatly assist you in your quest, and if you’re interested in having a no-cost consultation of your idea with us, click here to fill out our Confidentiality Agreement.

A commonly asked question is “How long does the Davison Process take?”

At Davison, our goal is to build your product in the most efficient time frame possible. Professionalism and delivering excellence in design for an economical value is the hallmark of the Davison process. Inventors, idea people and companies are always concerned about time frames when developing a new product for market. You see, developing a product is a complex process and it doesn’t happen overnight. Chances are you’ll only seriously pursue one product idea in your lifetime, and we recommend that the design be ready to be professionally presented.

The first step in our process is Pre-Development. Davison’s research team can finalize a Pre-Development report within 3 to 5 weeks. Once this first step is completed, if the client does not have a professional quality sample with packaging, we offer that service.

The second step prepares your new product idea for presentation to a manufacturer. Our team begins to envision the final design and packaging possibilities. The design team combines creative energy and design knowledge to create a working product sample of your idea. A new product sample with packaging typically takes 4 to 6 months to complete. During the process you’re updated on the development of your product.

Founder George Davison created a process and built a team of over 250 employees to effectively develop new products. With over 20 years of experience our team has developed one of the world’s fastest new product delivery systems. We’re able to produce over 200 new products every 30 days, and this experience enables us to give our clients an “inventing value.”

Developing a new product is a lengthy and complex process. Beware of anyone who tells you differently. A typical client can expect our process to take at least 6 months to get to the stage where the product idea is ready for presentation to a potential licensee. We feel our process is the most economical and extensive in the industry and we hope you consider putting our experience to work for you. If you would like to start developing your idea, simply complete our confidentiality agreement for a no-cost consultation of your idea.
