“Stick a knife in it!” “Smack the bottom.” “Hold it at a 45-degree angle and tap the 57.” Every ketchup connoisseur has their own technique for coaxing the tomato topping slowly out of a newly opened bottle. But things can get down right dangerous as diners flail around trying to get the last ounce of this creeping condiment from the bottom of the bottle.

Well, the painstaking process of topping our burgers and fries may be over.

From the people who brought you a mapping of the human genome and Bose sound systems comes LiquiGlide — “a revolutionary super-slippery coating to liberate your ketchup” – from a group of MIT engineers.

MIT PhD candidate Dave Smith and his team of mechanical engineers and nano-technologists from the Varanasi Research Group have put hundreds of years of bottle-beating debates to rest, creating bottle surfaces from which condiments simply glide onto your plate.

According to the LiquiGlide website, the coating is made entirely from food materials; no nanoparticles to worry about. “Even if you scraped off the coating with a knife and ate it, it would be completely harmless and flavorless.”

Varanasi’s innovative way to package condiments will hopefully make life easier in the future.

In the meantime, check out these Davison products that already do.

RV Leveler

We don’t want our vacations to turn into work. So Davison created the RV Leveler, a two-part product that enables users to quickly determine whether their motorhome is level. The RV Leveler’s base communicates wirelessly with a corresponding handheld device. The four-light LED display on the remote unit enables the user to see immediately where adjustments are needed.

Hover Creeper

Working on cars is tough enough. Navigating underneath them shouldn’t be. Traditional automotive creepers have wheels that get stuck in floor cracks and shift wildly over bolts or other loose parts that frequently break, leaving a mechanic stuck. Instead of trying to roll over an uneven or cracked garage floor, the new Hover Creeper literally hovers slightly above it.

Better Tether

It’s a doggone shame that some pet owners leave their pups twisted around trees or poles outside without food or water. Well, this Better Tether is placed in-ground, eliminating obstacle to pets, humans and machines. The divided food and water bowl can never be tipped over, and the unit never has to be moved for the lawnmower. Also, a big congratulations to the winner of our Better Tether Giveaway, Stephanie Shreve Baker! We hope your pup really enjoys it!

In the future, when you make a burger with the Fill N’ Grill, it will be much easier to put Ketchup in the middle. Try some bacon too.

Every great invention is thought to have a beginning and an end. But the creative process doesn’t always stop at the “finished” product. The showerhead begot the jet-massage setting; the car begot the rest stop; and the door begot the mp3 doorbell. If necessity is the mother of invention, these Davison products are its sons and daughters.

Mary Anderson’s Windshield Wiper

Anderson observed that NYC streetcar drivers often had to open their windows in order to see during inclement weather, sometimes even stopping the streetcar to go outside to clear the window. Her idea consisted of a lever inside the vehicle that controlled a spring-loaded arm with a rubber blade. The lever, with a counterweight to keep the wiper in contact with the window, could move the blade across the windshield, removing rain or snow. With her 1903 patent, Anderson’s invention proved to be the first windshield-clearing device to be effective.

WHAT ABOUT THE INSIDE OF OUR WINDSHIELD?

Davison’s Inshield Wiper

As we briefly discussed yesterday, Davison developed the Inshield Wiper for a client who wanted an easy way to thoroughly clean the interior of a vehicle’s windows. The kit includes a cleaning pad and a buffing pad that attaches to an applicator via Velcro. The unit fits on the back of the hand and is held in place with elastic straps, giving the user easier access to sloping windshields. With the wrist and hand in a more natural position, the user can do a better job of cleaning the inside windshield and back window.

(A typical project does not get a royalty agreement, sell in stores or generate a profit.)

__________

Arnot and Brain’s Electric Drill

The invention of the first electric drill is credited to Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain in 1889, at Melbourne, Australia. Wilhelm Fein invented the portable electric drill in 1895, at Stuttgart, Germany. In 1917, Black & Decker patented a trigger-like switch mounted on a pistol-grip handle.

WHERE SHOULD WE PUT OUR DRILLS?

Davison’s Pegboard Power Drill Holder

Davison’s team of designers created an all-in-one station to securely hold a portable drill, charger and drill bits. This product can be placed on a pegboard or mounted onto a wall, providing a convenient device for organizing tools.

George Stephen’s Kettle Grill

The kettle grill is considered the classic American grill design. The original and oft-copied Weber kettle grill was invented in 1951 by George Stephen. It has remained one of the most commercially successful charcoal grill designs to date.

Davison’s Fill N’ Grill

We created the Fill N’ Grill to make filling burger patties with flavorful ingredients a quick and mess-free task. Simply put a meat patty in the bottom tray, insert and place the second patty on top. Then press the “burger button” and take your creation to the grill. The product is dishwasher safe, so cleanup is a breeze!

As these Davison products prove, building upon an existing idea doesn’t make your creation any less of a great product!

According to HISTORY.com, John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. In a strange coincidence, President Adams passed away on July 4th, 1826.

I think all Americans can agree, when it comes to the delicious seared meats and sides we enjoy this holiday – we’re not going to quibble over a 200+ year-old argument. Instead, let’s celebrate the fun facts that make the Fourth of July a truly remarkable feast of the senses.

More than 1 in 4: The chance that the hot dogs and pork sausages consumed on the Fourth of July originated in Iowa. The Hawkeye State was home to 19 million hogs & pigs as of March 1, 2011.

6.8 billion pounds: Total production of cattle and calves in Texas in 2010. Chances are good that the beef hot dogs, steaks and cheese burgers on your backyard grill came from the Lone Star State, which accounted for about one-sixth of the nation’s total production.

6: Number of states in which the value of broiler chicken production was $1 billion or greater between December 2009 and November 2010. There is a good chance that one of these states — Georgia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi or Texas — is the source of your barbecued chicken.

Over 1 in 3: The odds that your side dish of baked beans originated from North Dakota, which produced 36 percent of the nation’s dry, edible beans in 2010. Another popular Fourth of July side dish is corn on the cob. Florida, California, Georgia, Washington and New York together accounted for 68 percent of the fresh market sweet corn produced nationally in 2010.

Please Pass the Potato: Potato salad and potato chips are popular food items at many Fourth of July barbecues. Approximately half of the nation’s spuds were produced in Idaho or Washington state in 2010.

More than 3/4: Amount of the nation’s head lettuce production in 2010 that came from California. This lettuce may end up in your salad or on your burger.

7 in 10: The chances that the fresh tomatoes in your salad came from Florida or California, which combined accounted for 71 percent of U.S. fresh market tomato production last year.

Florida: The state that led the nation in watermelon production last year (750 million pounds).

81 million: Number of Americans who said they have taken part in a barbecue during the previous year. It’s probably safe to assume a lot of these events took place on Independence Day.

And, here are a few Davison designed products that can help make your picnic a huge success (tomorrow or anytime during the summer):

Fill N’ Grill

Your family and friends will be in for a pleasant surprise when they bite into one of your chewy, dessert treats! The Silicone Dessert Bar Pan’s 12 candy-bar shaped molds can be filled with brownie batter, Rice Krispie treats or corn bread. Each piece comes out perfect! An added perk for the chef, unlike metal bake-ware, the pan is flexible and remains cool to the touch!

Party Traveler
