Kat Nouri would prepare nutritious lunches for her children, bring her own lunch to work, and was extremely dedicated to purchasing hormone-free, healthy foods. Like many health-conscious people, Nouri wasn’t only concerned about what she was putting into her body, she was also concerned about the impact her decisions had on our environment.
Given the way some companies manufacture their plastic products, Nouri knew that some of the containers and bags she chose to store and package food in could have a negative impact on the foods themselves.
Plastic bags and containers are certainly easy to use and fairly cheap alternatives to keeping your food fresher, longer. However, plastic and petroleum-based storage solutions contain toxic chemicals. If exposed to heat (from warm foods), these containers can leech their harmful toxins into our food, proving to be hazardous to our health–not to mention the impact that these chemicals have on our environment.
In 2005, Kat founded Modern-twist, a San Francisco based studio dedicated to working toward a plastic-free world. Modern-twist revolves its business model around creating functional items for the home that are made using 100% pure food-grade silicone – a polymer made using sand, heat, and oxygen.
Knowing that 20,000 sandwich bags are discarded into landfills every day, taking over 500 years to fully decompose, Modern-twist invented the Stasher Storage Bag. The Stasher bag was developed by Nouri and her team using an even higher grade of silicone than most of their already environmentally-friendly products.

The drive for creating a healthier environment drove Nouri and her team to invent a product that not only addresses an environmental concern, but also addresses a human health concern.
