More on Davison and the Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA)

  • Davison Design and Development started in 1989 by G.M. Davison in his grandfather’s basement. Today it is a cutting-edge 110,000-square foot product design and development factory.
  • Services includes research, industrial design, virtual reality, product samples, packaging, presentation, video, animation and royalty management.
  • Davison-developed products have been sold in Home Depot, Target, JC Penny, Linens ‘n Things, Sears, Dick’s Sporting Goods, AutoZone, The Sports Authority, FAO Schwarz, Modell’s and Dunham Sports.
  • Davison submitted six designs for judging and won two awards — a silver in concept design for the Hover Creeper and a bronze for The BikeBoard. In 1997, Davison earned a bronze for the Oil Filter Gripper.
  • Winners will be honored at a black tie ceremony at the Hilton Austin in Austin, Texas, Wednesday, Sept. 20. A “People’s Choice” award will also be presented at this time, during the 2006 IDSA National Conference and Education Symposium.
  • In its 26th year, the 2006 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) competition is co-sponsored by BusinessWeek magazine and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA).
  • Categories include, among others, consumer electronics, housewares, transportation, sporting goods, furniture and medical and scientific equipment.
  • Last year’s winners included Motorola for its Razr, Apple’s iPod Shuffle, Microsoft, Nike, Sony and more.
  • In the more than 1,000 entries received, 28 countries were represented this year, including: Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
  • Eighteen IDEA jurors awarded 27 gold, 39 silver and 42 bronze awards – the lowest awarded in five years.
  • All 106 winners are featured on IDSA’s Web site (www.idsa.org) with photos, descriptions and contacts.
