Speed Dial: Patented Combination Locks

General Design, Product Design

combination lock products

Masterlock has taken on a new design in the hope of attracting a whole new generation of school-goers. This combination lock nixes the numbers and relies on the toggles. Using any combination of left, right, upward or downward motions, you can set this lock for your new locker this new school year.

I think it is pretty aesthetically pleasing, and it claims to have increased bolt cutter protection and anti-shim technology, too. I remember when locks used to have numbers on them; boy am I getting old.

Dutch Hot Tub

grid wood fire hot tubhot tub design

This ingenious hot tub is getting some attention because it is off the grid, mobile, lightweight and well, just awesome. Firewood is placed within the coil of pipes and set aflame. When the water heats, it creates a circulation of hot water. Made of poly-fiber and stainless steel, this portable hot tub is shown on a canoe, tied to the roof of the car and in remote places where you normally can’t find a hot tub – until now.

Advances In Technology

Product Design, Product Innovation, Upcoming Inventions

I was amazed to see this early invention of the GPS (1932). It used a rolling key map to gauge where you were as you drove. Not so much global positioning, but it was a clever way to track your location around the neighborhood.

As for newspapers, reading in real time hasn’t always been as easy as picking up an iPad. Check out these kids in 1938 reading the children’s page of a Missouri newspaper as it is fed out of an early fax machine.

Even life vests have evolved into a state-of-the-art device, as compared to bicycle inner tubes wrapped around the upper bodies of these young Germans in 1925.

Novel Eraser

Product Design, Product Innovation

Kokuyo Milikeshi Eraser

This eraser has 5 different widths to accommodate the line width of the paper you are writing on. Designed to be used in what could be called a dying art, handwriting, this eraser is none-the-less a good idea. Maybe the designer of this product can squeeze out a highlighter version of the concept.

This hidden grill could blend in anywhere. Designed to be wall mounted, it doesn’t appear as if it could be fully functional. But, looks can be deceiving.
