These are from a write-up on Core77, showing the history of helmets for firefighters. Each one of these helmets is unique, each one a safety cover for firefighters as they work in the most extreme circumstances. As a person who comes from a family that goes back to three generations of firefighters, I can appreciate the value of these safety helmets and the integrity of each hand-crafted one shown in the video below.
For over 20 years, Theo Jansen has been making new forms of life using plastic tubing and recycled plastic bottles. These skeleton-like creatures even walk in the wind! Can you imagine coming across one of these on the beach?
Check out these aquariums – one is home to 237,800 gallons of sea life; while the other holds only 10 ml of water and can be held in the palm of your hand. The difference between these two aquariums is scale, but each is great in its own right.
The Aquadom, located in Berlin, Germany, is cleaned daily by two full-time divers, houses 56 species of marine life and even has an elevator in the core of it.
The other can be found in Russia and was meticulously created using tweezers, then filled with a syringe. Believe it or not, this tiny aquarium can hold 5 danio rerio fish.
By harnessing light from the sun, this two square meter round focus can burn through anything, yes, anything! Focusing light from over 93,000,000 miles away, this device can reach temperatures up to 2500 Fahrenheit.
In the demonstration below, they spray a mist from a water bottle to show where the focus of the beam of light is and then they illustrate the extreme power of the light by burning a wooden board, a steel bolt and even a rock!
