The University of Maryland has come closer than ever to meeting a challenge set decades ago by the the American Helicopter Society. The Igor I. Sikorsky Human-Powered Helicopter Competition has challenged anyone to use a human powered helicopter to lift off the ground, hover for at least 60 seconds, reach an altitude of 3 meters during flight and stay within a 10-square-meter area.
