These old suitcases get a second life by an ingenious owner who turned them into a travel themed vanity and a wall cabinet. That’s a classy display of design aesthetic using found objects and patterns. This set of transformed luggage can be a spark of inspiration to a few creative viewers, I’m sure.

This cup holder is ingenious – the textured grip, vivid color and universal size opening. Intended for work stations with tight space, it actually uses a cantilever for extending space for your beverage. I can see many applications for this idea of squeeze-clipping an extension to table tops. Once again, as my readers already know, this is an example of simple design that uses stylizing to accentuate the pure function of its use.
Note to self: “remember to write a note to self.” Do you find it harder and harder to remember what it is you need to do, then find a place to write it down? We have now gone full circle, starting with simply jotting a note on a pad of paper, to typing to-do lists on mobile devices, and now writing notes on glasses. This surface-writable glass and mug are available for note taking and are easy to wash when you complete that list of reminders (or finish your drink). Ideal for writing out things like “two heaping spoonfuls of sugar,” or “fill to here with ice.” It’s about a 4 on the cool-o-meter.
This concept design is a heat wand that toasts your bread one side at a time. Ceramic by design, the inventor made it charge similar to that of electric toothbrushes. As you glide the heated wand over the toast the visual indicator appears to show you that your toasting is complete, this one with images of butterflies and ivy. Now that’s thinking outside of the box…or toaster, whatever. Expect this innovative concept to make it to market some time this year.
The design of this shopping cart chair is thinking outside the box. Inside the cart, yes, but definitely outside of the box. This seat appears to be more comfortable than it most likely is, though the metal wire frame looks like it would be perfect for an outdoor patio set. And how many times have you said to yourself, ”that would make a great chair”? This person actually turned that thought into a reality. It even passes for what you may find in a museum.
This folding bicycle helmet makes for a good idea in theory, but in practice it was a flop. Barred from sales in the United States, buyers can only purchase this item by circumventing strict U.S. safety standards and getting it shipped internationally. When designing anything, you should not compromise the safety of the end user. This collapsible helmet design, case in point.
When you are creative, the sky is the limit. At first glance, you may have a sudden urge for a cheeseburger and Coke to go with this basket of hot fries. Look a little closer and you see the fries and ketchup are really pound cake and icing.
When you use all that is around you to exhibit your knack for creativity, people look. The opportunities to wow people with your designer’s eye are all around you. Box cake with canned icing is easy. Slicing and dicing fries out of pound cake and replicating the color and thickness of the best ketchup ever is harder to do.
Remember this the next time you have the opprtunity to take it to the next level with whatever you design. It doesn’t matter if your medium is wood, metal or cake, if you have a passion for detail and a creative mindset anything is possible.
