The long-awaited Hydro Bone has hit the market, landing in Doctors Foster and Smith, the largest pet supply cataloger in the nation, which started out as a small group of dedicated veterinarians. The Hydro Bone originated several years ago on a Davison design team as they were brainstorming ideas for new pet toys for another company, which did not pursue it. The hydrating chew toy, which keeps dogs and puppies cool and content in hot weather, was brought back out recently by the corporate team in its work for Hugs Pet Products.

“We married the product up with them and they kind of ran with it,” said the corporate design manager.

The corporate team did the finishing touches and resolved issues related to materials and created the packaging. The product maintained its original design.

“It’s kind of cool that it’s actually a product we did years ago that we were able to bring back and revive,” said the original design manager on the project. “It’s pretty much the same concept we came up with a few years back.”

The VP of Licensing is hopeful we also will see the product in other stores in the near future. “It’s great to see it’s up on Dr. Foster’s and selling.”

If this innovative item follows in the path of other products we’ve developed for Hugs, it is sure to be a success. It certainly couldn’t have hit the market at a better time of year, when dog owners are searching for ways to keep their canine companions cool!

The Bucket Bench, which we created for Faucet Queen, has had its first production run, and 1,000 units are on a boat and on their way to market! We recently received the production approval sample from the factory; aside from some minor issues that were easily corrected, the sample was perfect.

“It looked fantastic,” said the creative coach of special operations. “It looked exactly like our prototype.”

The product is an addition to the Helping Hand line, bringing the total to 10 car cleaning items. It is designed to hold and keep all the items handy, while giving the user a convenient and comfortable place to sit while cleaning and detailing a vehicle.

The designer of the project was especially pleased and excited to see it turn out so well. Several people worked on the project to produce the engineering, graphic design, packaging, POP display, photography, and a lot of sewing.

“When all was said and done, our seamstress built three or four versions while working with the designer to refine the design,” the coach said.

The product will be for sale on Faucet Queen’s website along with the rest of the line and will be available for orders once FQ receives the units next month. We can’t wait to see what great possibilities await this great new product. Congratulations to all who worked on it!

Joseph struggled along the way never gave up, said his Director of New Products.  “He was so passionate about the product he found a way to make it happen.”

Two new sewing products that we designed for the Fons & Porter line are now selling in Jo-Ann Stores: The Ultimate Stiletto and Luma Threader.

And four pet items we created for Hugs Pet Products are selling at Debnroo.com: Viewport Birdhouse, A-frame Birdfeeder, Pet Palace, Auto Dish, the latter two of which are products we created for clients. More soon to come in this line, as well!

The additions also have added more stores to the number of those selling Davison products — the list just keeps on growing!

Davison’s quarterly company meeting was packed full of good news about the 43 new products and packaging with the Davison “D” that have gone to stores in the first quarter of 2010. “This is huge win,” said the Vice President of Licensing several times during the meeting.

He revealed 15 – 20 new products that are or soon will be selling in a wide variety of stores, including the Luma Threader and Ergo Stiletto, two more sewing tools that we redesigned for the Fons & Porter product line. The manufacturer loved our redesign, including the lighted feature on the threader, and the products are selling very well, said the VP.

A new client product, the Silicone Dessert Bar Pan, will air this summer on QVC, and it will ship in store packaging complete with the Davison “D,” as opposed to a plain brown package. We also received word that Kitchen Collections and Hobby Lobby have both placed orders for the innovative product.

The 10 car cleaning items we developed for the Helping Hands line are available for purchase and also have been presented to Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and “every big boy out there,” he said. The line also includes a product created by a client who hired us after he could not fully develop it on his own.

The fabric birdhouse and birdfeeder we designed for Hugs Pet Products are now in Menards, a chain of 250 home improvement stores in the Midwest, and they also are selling at e-tailers.

New packaging we created for products that have hit the stores include several home décor items that have been picked up by Big Lots and Belle’s — both of which are new stores for Davison. There are also 5 additional Comfort Products cushions on the shelves (3 in AutoZone and 2 in Walmart).

“This year we’re going to see a huge increase in all the packaging we’re doing for them,” the VP said. We also will have packaging “all over board” for Metro, such as pet products, home décor, housewares, silverware and storage — and we just picked up another order, with many more items headed to Davison for packaging!

“They’re happy with our work, the quick turnaround time and the quality packaging,” said the senior category director.

The best thing about creating new packaging for companies, other than the Davison “D,” is the fact we’ve created trademarked logos and a new look for the products, which provides royalties and an updated brand that communicates clearly to consumers.

“Congratulations to everyone involved with all the new products and packaging in the first quarter,” the VP told the company. “It’s a great accomplishment, and you’re going to continue to see more.”

The Global Pet Expo, the pet industry’s largest annual trade show, featured more than 800 exhibitors and thousands of new products and pet product buyers from around the world. One of the most exciting new lines was Hugs Pet Products. The nearly 30 products with packaging in the Hugs booth all carried the Davison “D.”

“The show was awesome; we had a ton of products on display,” said Davison’s Vice President of Licensing, who traveled to the Orlando show with Davison’s President

The products we developed for the Hugs line were “very well received,” the VP said. They got a lot of interest from e-tailers and smaller chain stores, as well as some of the big ones. “Hopefully we’ll get orders placed there in the near future.”

The show was a wonderful venue to introduce the company’s new name and brand, which “the buyers loved,” he said. The owners also loved the new Hugs brand and logo we created for them, which gives the product a higher end look and evokes a “warm, fuzzy feeling.”

In addition to the original style, many of the products at the show featured a camouflage design so as to appeal to buyers from sporting goods stores, particularly male buyers who may not be as interested in ‘warm and fuzzy.’ Since a lot of people take their dogs hunting, it could be a good way to generate interest in those venues, he added.

The design and rebranding of the line was a “nice collaborative effort.” The brand and logo was Mr. Davison’s vision. A major role was played by members of Davison’s corporate design team, who were responsible for product design, graphic design, engineering, package design, trade show booth design and construction, as well as web design and production, copywriting and marketing. Fantastic job, everyone!

Among the products at the show that we developed for Hugs were seven we created for our inventor clients. Corporate products we created for the line also were at the show. In all, at least 25 products designed by Davison were featured.

It’s a triple play! Our Meatball Baker, Party on the Go and Perfect Slice are featured in the Winter 2009 edition of “Innovation,” the quarterly design publication of the Industrial Designers Society of America. Our senior concept designer, who created the Perfect Slice, submitted the products to the magazine. The Party on the Go was invented by our client, Joy, and the Meatball Baker was invented by our client, Jean. Congratulations, everyone!

What a nice surprise to see all three products in the Housewares section of the magazine, right up there with G.E., Bunn, Bosch, Oreck and Pyrex, in a full-page spread in “Innovation!” Each product shot includes a great description, as well as a link to Davison.
